What does it mean to love our neighbor in a changing climate?

Our neighbors include people whose homes are threatened by flood, fire, drought, and extreme heat.

They include communities whose livelihoods depend upon land and water.

They include generations who will inherit the choices we make today.

Care for creation and care for our neighbor cannot be separated.

The earth is God's beloved creation, entrusted to all of us. May we listen to those most affected, tend what has been entrusted to us, and work together for the flourishing of all creation.

"The earth belongs to the Creator, and everything in it; the world, and all who live in it.” -Psalm 24:1

“As I have read the Gospels over the years, the belief has grown in me that Christ did not come to found an organized religion but came instead to found an unorganized one. He seems to have come to carry religion out of the temples into the fields and sheep pastures, onto the roadsides and the banks of the rivers, into the houses of sinners and publicans, into the town and the wilderness, toward the membership of all that is here. Well, you can read and see what you think.”

September is su***de awareness.

September is su***de awareness.

Prevention matters deeply. So does honoring the complex reality survivors face. This September – for the 9th year in a row – our “Su***de is Complicated” campaign is launching on social media.

Our goal is to increase public awareness of the complexities surrounding su***de and su***de prevention and increase support and understanding for su***de loss survivors.

Su***de loss survivors have a direct and deeply personal experience with su***de that alters their perspective forever. The profound trauma of their loss, recollections of events prior to and following the su***de, and the knowledge they gain from other survivors leads them to realize the complexity of trying to prevent someone from ending their life.

Follow along, and join us in expanding the conversation this month.

Hot and humid today. Stay hydrated, take it easy and keep an eye on our neighbors.

A heat advisory will go into effect this afternoon starting at 1 PM until 8 PM Wednesday evening. Heat index values up to are 103 expected. The high temperatures paired with oppressive humidity may cause heat-related illness. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Stay awhile.

We are often quick to offer advice, search for solutions, or find the right words.

But sometimes the most faithful thing we can offer another person is simply our presence.

Sit beside them.
Listen to the story.
Share the silence.
Celebrate the joy.
Make space for the tears.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” -Romans 12:15

We don't always need to fix what hurts or explain what cannot be explained. Sometimes love simply stays.

Today, may we remember that presence is a gift.

I'm hearing reports of 3 inches of rain in Martinsburg last night and seeing pictures of high water at an intersection I know.

We are horrified and saddened by the news coming from Nepal about the flash flooding today. The ELCA is in contact with our companions and partners in Nepal as the impact continues to unfold. We hold our companions and partners, and the people of Nepal and Tibet in prayer in this incredibly challenging time.

Let us pray:

Loving God, in the communion of Christ, we are joined with the trials and sufferings of all. Be with the people of Nepal and Tibet affected by devastating flash flooding. Protect those who remain in danger, comfort those who grieve, strengthen first responders and aid workers, and guide leaders as they coordinate relief efforts.

Surround our companions and partners with your presence and peace. In the midst of uncertainty and loss, sustain hope, courage, and resilience through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
