Gender in the Lord
by Jacob Dunbar
God is not genderless nor does gender cease to exist in the Lord.
But what about Galatians 3:28-29 you may ask?
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” (Galatians 3:28-29)
This passage of scripture is not saying that females become males when they receive Christ Jesus. They are still in their bodies, and gender still exists in the Lord. Sons were the only heirs at that time, and we can see that the gospel is available to all. This passage shows that now in Christ Jesus all hierarchy and inequality have been abolished and we are all under the Lordship of our one and true King, Jesus.
Unfortunately some confusion has come from this passage. People have taken it to mean that gender ceases to exist in Christ and that spirit beings like angels and even God are genderless.
Angels are shown to have gender throughout scripture and other apocryphal books like the Book of Enoch. In Genesis the “sons of God” aka angels left heaven and had s*xual relations with human women who bore them children. These angels are clearly male. The book of Enoch goes deeper into these fallen angels who had children who were half angels and half human called the Nephilim. Zechariah 5:9 describes 2 female angels, and we are told in Hebrews 13:2 that some have entertained angels unaware meaning they appeared human.
This is important, because God is revealed to mankind through gender from the beginning of creation. Genesis 1:26-27 and Genesis 5:1-2 tell us that mankind called “Adam” are created in the image of God, male and female.
The Trinity or God as the Elohim, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit say, “Let us make mankind in our own image.” This is the plural yet one God saying “Let Us.”
Genesis 5 reiterates this fact and tells us that both Adam and Eve were created in the image of God, and both were called Adam.
“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created mankind, He made him in the image of God, male and female created them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.” (Genesis 5:1-2)
Then, just as the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and is called the helper, God said Adam needs a helper (Ezer) and took Eve from the side of Adam (flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone). Ezer in the Hebrew translated to helper in English is not a subordinate word. Ezer is even used to describe God many times throughout scripture.
So, women are CLEARLY created in the image of God as are men. This is such a simple truth. In the Godhead we have the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives birth and nurses as described in scripture and by Jesus Himself. This is not complex or confusing. Fathers don’t give birth or nurse. Jesus is clearly male which in fact makes the Holy Spirit the requisite female. The Trinity, the Elohim is the family of God that we are birthed into. This is not a metaphor or shadow, but the substance and foundation of the gospel. Jesus is the SON of God, not a metaphorical Son, but the Son of both His Father and Mother.
“Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.” (1 John 2:22-23)
