WATER SYSTEM UPDATE: LEAK FOUND
The leak has been found and shut down. The water system should return to normal by noon today, but a boil-water notice will remain in effect until it is officially rescinded.
The City of Athens now has a clearer picture of what caused this morning’s water emergency.
At about 2 a.m., operators began seeing a significant drop in water levels. By about 3:30 a.m., the water treatment plant could no longer keep up with the loss, even after additional pumps were started. By about 5 a.m., the City’s water towers were empty and the system had lost pressure.
Crews have been searching for the leak since about 4 a.m. Finding it was difficult because the break occurred overnight in a wooded area with few homes or people nearby.
The problem was a major break in a 12-inch water line near Loop 7 and Flat Creek Road.
Because the water system lost pressure, a boil-water notice remains in effect.
