* TGIF-And Sunday's Coming (weekly encouragement from Christ the King Church, Arlington)
Everyone has experienced broken relationships. Some are minor - like that first love in 9th grade (or so I hear since I didn’t have a “steady” in high school).
But some broken relationships are major, and those hurt, some for a long time. And whether you’re dealing with a past hurt or an ongoing one, it helps to remember this – God was the first One to get dumped.
We abandoned God first. After giving us literal Paradise, we threw it all away for pride, ego, the desire to be our own god. The same battle rages in the heart of every human today.
The bad news is…We have a broken relationship
…you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, Colossians 1:21
Our alienation began in the Garden. At that first rejection of God and all that is good mankind became alienated…
…from self Genesis 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
…from God Genesis 3:8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God…
…from others Genesis 3:12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
…from nature Genesis 3:17 “…Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.”
Every bit of brokenness we see and experience in the world today stems from this event, the fall of man. And in our natural state we are “hostile in mind” toward God.
21And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
BUT THE GOOD NEWS is that the reason Jesus came was reconciliation (Romans 5:10). God sent His Son to call us back to Himself (John 3:16). It is God taking action: Ephesians 2:11-14 Therefore remember that formerly …you were at that time separate from Christ, …having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace,
This is so amazing! It’s not up to you to save yourself (see: all other religions). God came down to our level, He loved us first! And now in Jesus I am holy and blameless and free from guilt.
…if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. (Col. 1:23)
You may not be able to do anything about a broken human relationship but you can work on the one relationship that is eternal and life-changing – your relationship with Jesus Christ.
