As we look for opportunities to serve our community, one of our neighbors (whom we share a street with), Lufkin Road Middle School shared with us the need for volunteers to give 30 minutes of instructional help for students in need each week. No special training needed, just helping read to kids, help them with their homework and/or simply helping new students from other cultures adapt to their new environment.

They are needing help on Tuesdays-Fridays at various times throughout the school day. If you are interested, please share with us your availability and we will connect you with the principle.

When we think about reaching the nations, we often think of those who go to the places and peoples with the least access to Jesus Christ. However, people with the least access to Jesus also come to places where Jesus followers live-as students.

Having these students show up on our doorsteps as our new neighbors is such a gift. It’s an opportunity for us to welcome them well and to obey Jesus by inviting the foreigner into our homes. With love and respect, we can gradually encourage them to follow Christ. It also allows us to practice intentional relationships with international friends, which is helpful in making disciples of all nations.

These students are within reach of the gospel for just a few short years. We don't have much time to show them the kingdom of God, that has nothing to do with the money, power and prestige they seek-but everything to do with the satisfaction, purpose and peace they need only found in a personal relationship with Jesus.

Astonishingly, almost 60% of all international students come from countries where the Christian population is less than 2 percent...this offers us the chance to shape an international student’s understanding of Jesus Christ, thereby impacting the kind of people who will one day shape their countries as leaders, change makers and policy shapers. Befriending international students is indeed a strategic opportunity.

Ways to befriend international students:

- Sign-up to be an international friend at a local university
- Open your home for a holiday meal
- Attend cultural events at a university campus or community event
- Organize fun group events to see sites in the city where you live
- Be a family away from home, and invite them over when they get lonely
- Provide transportation to and from the grocery store
- Participate in or start conversational English classes
- Host tea drinking opportunities in your home or community center
- Invite them to read the Bible with you

The last year has been crazy and has made it hard to connect with others. We realize that it has been especially tough for our moms who have welcomed little ones and entered a new phase of life. If you have had a baby since March 2020, we want a chance to get to know you and connect you with other new moms. Bring your little one (we will have swings and bouncers that you can grab as you come in) and join us for a time of fellowship with other first time moms and the Summit Apex Kids Staff team.
