A team is being put together to travel to Cuba in December to serve alongside the people and churches we have built relationships with over the years. If you have an interest in joining the team or would like more information about the trip, please see Linda Fereira.
We also wanted to share a story with you about Maria* and the challenges families in Cuba are facing every day. (We personally know "Maria" and have changed her name to protect her privacy.)
Imagine having to dig your own well because you can no longer afford to buy water.
For Maria, this became a reality.
Maria cares for her 80-year-old mother in Cuba. With no reliable water supply in her home, she had been purchasing water to meet their daily needs. But the cost became too much. With the help of friends, Maria finally dug a well of her own.
Her story is just one example of the hardship families are experiencing across Cuba. Nearly 3 million Cubans are facing difficulties accessing water as fuel shortages, power outages, and deteriorating infrastructure disrupt water supplies.
Some families walk to community wells. Others depend on local churches or wait for water deliveries. Some, like Maria, have had to find a way to create their own source of water.
Water is something many of us take for granted. For families in Cuba, finding enough water to drink, cook, wash, and care for loved ones can be a daily struggle. We share Maria’s story to help us better understand the challenges facing the people we serve and to remind us to keep them in our prayers.
As we prepare for our upcoming trip, we will also be collecting **reading glasses** to take to Cuba.
A woman we have worked with is preparing to start her own business providing reading glasses to people who cannot easily access or afford them. We want to support her efforts by bringing as many reading glasses as possible so she can help meet this need in her community.
Every pair we collect can help support this woman’s new business and make reading easier for someone who needs it.
