Don't Just Stay in the Indicatives, You Must Move to the Imperatives

Is Gospel knowledge useful if nothing changes? Is knowledge of Christ truly beneficial if a life is not transformed? What happens if our knowledge or teaching never progresses beyond just that, mere knowledge.
We are content with being right. Winning an argument is our supreme happiness in a contentious world. Pick a side and dig a trench. Empty philosophies. If the Gospel was only ideas, only truths that brought no change of behavior, no obedience, no sacrificial service, no witness to a dying world, no action, then it would be an empty philosophy too.

But the teachings in the Bible are not mere teachings, mere philosophy. All teaching in the Bible is meant to bring about transformation. There are truths, which can label as "Indicatives" (as they are statements that indicate truth, or ideas). But these are not given in isolation. They are given to move to the "Imperatives". The word "therefore" often clues us in when the gospel writers are moving from indicative to imperative. On the basis of THIS GREAT GOSPEL TRUTH, you must OBEY IN THIS WAY.

Since you have been saved by Christ, you must be conformed to His image. Paul's letters are full of this. Often, the first part of a letter will be "indicative" and the second half will be "imperative" (Romans and Ephesians).

So what are we to do? Read the Bible. See what Christ is calling you to. But let us be wise to start this one:

"Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - Matt 28:18-20

Since all authority on Heaven and Earth has been given to Jesus, let us obey Him and go make disciples. We don't follow an empty philosophy after all.

Your Jesus Story

What is your Jesus story? Can you share clearly and concisely how you have come to know Him? Someone needs to know. Some heart has been prepared by the Holy Spirit to respond to the transforming truth of who Jesus is and what he has done to save the lost. We are to bear witness of what He has done in our lives. We are to share His word, the powerful effectual written word.
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Heb. 4:12
“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO *BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!” Rom. 10:14-15

Consider the words of the old hymn by F***y Crosby and be encouraged to share His Story.

Tell me the story of Jesus
Verse 1
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed His birth,
"Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth."
Chorus
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Verse 2
Fasting alone in the desert,
Tell of the days that are past,
How for our sins He was tempted,
Yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor,
Tell of the sorrow He bore;
He was despised and afflicted,
Homeless, rejected and poor.
Verse 3
Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
Writhing in agony there;
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
Tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see;
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
Love paid the ransom for me.

Wordly Wisdom from Michael Perry:

Life at Conception

Genesis 2:7
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

In Genesis, we see God form man from the dust of the ground and breathe into him the breath of life. In that moment, Adam became a living soul—a person created with mind, emotions, and will. This first act of creation reveals a profound truth: human life is sacred because it comes from God Himself.

Humanity, created in God’s image, reflects this divine pattern through procreation. At the moment of conception, when s***m and egg unite, a new and unique human life begins. This tiny life is not merely a potential person, but a distinct individual, bearing a complete and unique genetic identity from the very beginning.

Scripture consistently presents life as God’s work in the womb, not something accidental or insignificant. Personhood is not granted later by age, ability, or development; it is part of God’s creative design from conception. Every child, no matter how small, is fearfully and wonderfully made by the hand of God.

Preparing our hearts for worship-

Deuteronomy 6:6–7: "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Wordly Wisdom from Ricky Simpson:
Clay Pots
Isaiah 64:8 “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter, we are all the work of your hand.”

Recently, Jenn and I had a date night at Hollowed Earth where we tried our hands at pottery making. While there I was reminded through the actions we did of this verse and how grateful that I am for the Lord being the potter of my clay vessel instead of me. There are five steps to taking a lump of clay and turning it into a pot (Centering, the hole, the pull, stretching, and the kiln). In this comparison let’s just look at step 1, centering. When we began the process and the wheel started turning our lump of clay, the artist/teacher had us apply light pressure until the clay was centered on the wheel and turning smoothly. I can’t help but be reminded of our walk with Jesus. Is your walk Christ-centered? If not, like me throughout my life, you’ve probably felt the gentle nudging (pressure) of the Lord to bring us back to him and having our whole life centered around his presence. Now, for this part of our class, the teacher had to show me where to apply the right amount of pressure to get my lump centered on the wheel. Similarly, we have a wonderful teacher and a guidebook, the Bible, to show us just where He needs to apply pressure to get our lives back where they belong. Christ Centered!
We will continue our pottery lesson when it is again my turn for Wordly Wisdom!
Blessings in our Lord, Jesus Christ, our center.
Ricky
