Love as Action: a Declaration of Resistance
July 4 National Day of Action
Quaker public witness has long stood in opposition to cruel and authoritarian actions in our country. In this moment of rising authoritarianism and fascism, we are called to live that tradition again—together, in public.
On July 4, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, communities across the country will gather in public spaces to bear witness, speak truth, and act together. And that same day, I invite you to join me at 3:30 pm at the west side of the Coronado Mall, specifically in the parking lot at the intersection of San Pedro and Uptown for one hour of collective witness. This is the location of the Park and Ride to the 4th of July celebration at Balloon Fiesta Park and their buses will be departing at 4:30. We will gather in the area of the lot closest to that intersection.
Together, we will affirm:
We will protect people and communities.
We will resist authoritarian government.
We will build a free, equal and just future.
In recent months, thousands have gathered in more than 40 cities for Love as Action, an initiative of the American Friends Service Committee with tens of thousands more encountering this message of resistance. This July 4 builds on that growing movement—bringing people together in a coordinated, nationwide moment of moral clarity.
Our hope is that our presence will give hope to all who see us—to show that resistance is possible, that we are not alone, and that we share responsibility for the future we are shaping together.
Bring a camp chair or folding chair, water, sunscreen, and an umbrella if you'd like shade. No shade structures are available. Meeting for Worship will begin at 3:45 pm.
