MEDITATIONS ON THE HIGHWAY

A holiday in Northern Xinjiang became an unexpected moment of faith for Rev Derrick Lau and his fellow travellers. On their 12-day journey through breathtaking landscapes, the group hoped to travel along the famous Duku Highway, a scenic route open only a few months each year due to harsh weather conditions. However, unfavourable weather threatened to close the road and force a long detour. Moved by conviction, Rev Lau shared with the group that he would pray for the highway to open. The next morning, their guide announced that the weather had cleared overnight and the highway was open. The group travelled the route surrounded by stunning mountain views and flowing rivers. For Rev Lau, it was a powerful reminder of a kairos moment, a glimpse of God’s grace and a testimony that when we pray, it is not the power of our prayers, but the power of the God who hears them.

ACTIVE AGEING IN GOD’S KINGDOM THROUGH MISSION WORK

As Singapore’s population ages, Christian seniors are discovering that retirement can become a new season of purpose in God’s kingdom. MMS encourages believers to prayerfully consider serving in missions, whether through short term trips, professional expertise, or longer term ministry. Discernment involves evaluating one’s health, finances, family commitments, skills, and calling, while seeking guidance from pastors and church communities. Several seniors have already answered this call. Chan K*m Kit now supports administration and accounts at St Paul Methodist School in Timor-Leste. Anna Loo and her husband Rev Yeung serve in prayer ministry and pastoral care, establishing a “Watch City” house of prayer. Ho Lip Jin contributes construction expertise to mission schools, while Dr Eileen Aw helped guide the Singapore Mission School in Laos. Their stories remind us that God’s call has no age limit. In every season of life, our gifts and experiences can be used to bless others and advance His kingdom.

MMS was thankful for the opportunity to join both K*m Yan Methodist Church’s Missions Sunday on 17 May and Covenant Community Methodist Church on 31 May.

At K*m Yan Methodist Church, we were encouraged by the meaningful engagement with members throughout the day. We thank God for the opportunity for Ps Erick Tan to minister during the combined worship service, and for Dennis to share about the work of MMS during the Missions Agencies’ Sharing Session.

At Covenant Community Methodist Church, we were deeply blessed by the church’s warm welcome, continued support, and strong partnership in missions across Cambodia, East Asia, and Nepal. It was especially heartening to connect with members, especially through the Flourish ministry booth, where handmade products by Cambodian women were shared as part of livelihood and income generation efforts.

Thank God for these precious partnerships in missions and for every encouraging conversation and interaction with church members. Together, we continue to witness how God is stirring His people to serve the nations with love and compassion.
