16 Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. 17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work. 18 I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts. 19 For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. 20 All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth? 22 So I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot. Who can bring him to see what will be after him?

-Ecc 3:16-22 ESV

TO DUST ALL; RETURN

In the exercise of justice on earth, there are loopholes. Our judges and justice systems are imperfect. Either they err in declaring a wicked person righteous or a righteous person wicked. But, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for in due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds. There is an end to everyone – death.

Death is an equalizer to every creature. Man and beast are equally mortal. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. All are destined to one place. Death is interesting in the animal world. An anteater feeds on ants. When it dies, the ants will eat its decomposing body. A bird feeds on worms, but worms will consume its decomposing body.

Solomon asks a rhetorical question that sounds uncertain. Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth? Yet, it points us to the limits of human observation “under the sun” (Ecc 1:3). Solomon is highlighting how, from a strictly earthly vantage point, the destinies of people and animals look identical. We see bodies die, but we do not directly see what happens to the spirit. Only the Scripture lifts the curtain for us to see. Paul affirms that “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). Jesus assures, “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (Mat 22:32), underscoring that our confidence rests on what He declares, not merely on what we observe.

Unlike animals, human beings, created in God’s image (Gen 1:27), possess an eternal spirit that “rises upward,” entering God’s presence upon death. This truth does make life here on earth meaningful and purposeful. Otherwise, a life of indulgence in pleasure and immorality would be justified. Solomon warns, “Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.”[Ecc 11:11]

Death is inevitable. Judgment is sure. To live for God is the best choice. [Phil 1:13]

9 What gain has the worker from his toil? 10 I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. 12 I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; 13 also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.

-Ecc 3:9-13 ESV

EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL IN ITS TIME

God is inscrutable in His ways and wisdom. He controls the affairs of men like placing jigsaw pieces on a puzzle. Like threads in God’s hand, He is waving our lives into a beautiful tapestry. We could engage in a work only as God allows. He assigns ‘the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.” [v.10] The term "burden" suggests a weight or responsibility that humanity engages. This reflects the human condition after the Fall, where labor and toil became part of life (Gen 3:17-19). Moreover, man can be seen in search for meaning and purpose in a world that often seems futile. As Solomon asked, “What gain has the worker from his toil?”

Man’s consolation is God makes ‘everything beautiful in its time.” There is divine order and timing established by God. This beauty is not merely aesthetic but encompasses the idea of appropriateness and purpose. In the biblical narrative, God's creation is described as "very good" (Gen 1:31), indicating that everything has an inherent beauty and purpose when aligned with God's timing. The Hebrew word for "beautiful" can also mean "appropriate" or "fitting." This suggests that God's timing is perfect, even if it is not immediately apparent to human understanding. Definitely, God's ways and timing are beyond human comprehension (see Isa 55:8-9). Thus, we ask not ‘Why?’ but ‘What’s your purpose through..?’

Also, He has ‘put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.’[v.11] Man is confronted with the uncertainties of life. But God knows the end from the beginning.[Isa 46:9,10] Man has an innate sense of the eternal, a longing for something beyond the temporal world. This concept is unique to humanity, as it reflects the ‘imago Dei’ [image of God] in which humans were created (Gen 1:27). He is aware to a spiritual dimension that transcends earthly existence, indicating a divine purpose and destiny beyond this earthly life. This longing for eternity can be seen in various cultures and religions throughout history, where people seek meaning beyond the material world. A reality that drives believers to set their minds on things above (Col 3:2).

Solomon’s resolve is for man to ‘be joyful and to do good as long as they live’….. ‘to eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil, which is God’s gift.’[v.12] Because God is in control, man can be joyful in every circumstance.[Phil 4:4]. However, his joy is when he’s doing what is ‘good.’ "Do good" reflects the ethical and moral teachings of the Old Testament, particularly the Law of Moses, which emphasized justice, mercy, and righteousness. This phrase underscores the importance of living a life that aligns with God's commandments and reflects His character. The call to do good is echoed by Paul in Galatians 6:9-10, where believers are encouraged to not grow weary in doing good. It also points to the life of Jesus Christ, who went about doing good (Acts 10:38), serving as the ultimate example for believers.

FAMILY MATTERS (Genesis 2:15-25)

God’s Word for Today

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

-Ecc 3:1-8 ESV

THE SEASONS OF LIFE

An unchangeable phenomenon in this world is change. The natural world we live in is governed by seasons. It varies where we live. The tropics have seasons much different than the temperate countries. These unique qualities make the world interesting to live in. Without these changes and variations, this world could be boring.

Life within is no different. There is a time to be born, grow strong, become weak, and die. A little bud can bloom; petals wither fall; fruits emerge, ripen and fall to the ground, and seeds are dispersed. Similarly, our lives are like the flowers. Our lives may bloom and wither, and die. Yet, Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

God is sovereign to determine the seasons of life. Everything, including difficult seasons, fits into God's ultimate plan, and He makes all things beautiful in their proper time. Instead of cursing the seasons, let us embrace them. We can’t change the seasons of life, but adapt to live significantly well. As somebody says, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain." If you are ageing, do age gracefully.

Let us accept the rhythms of life. A season won’t last long. Life is like music, wherein the melody changes. Striking a particular note is a preparation for the next. One at a time. One dying man express in his deathbed that his favorite line in the bible is, “And it came to pass.” And he is right, isn’t he?

24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

-Ecc 2:24-26 ESV

DO ENJOY LIFE

Solomon concludes that there is no better state in life than to find enjoyment. Let us enjoy the fruit of our labor. It is God’s gift. God gives us the power to get wealth. Moses says, “You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”[Deut 8:18]

He is the source of every blessing. [v.24,25] Paul says, “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”[1 Tim 4:4] God created the world for man to find joy in stewarding it.

One reality to note is an irony wherein a sinner may labor to accumulate wealth, only for God to transfer that wealth to someone who pleases Him. It pays to fear God. It is the wisest thing. As Solomon says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”[Prov 1:7] God favored the Jews to receive wealth from the Egyptians soon, as they moved out of Egypt. But, this volume of gold and silver God intends to be used for the building of the tabernacle and worship artifacts. Thus, the wealth that we gain from this world is for us to serve God better. He who pursues God foremost finds himself joyful.

God’s Word for Today

18 I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.

-Ecc 1:18-23 ESV

WHAT'S WRONG WITH DILIGENCE?

A diligent person is like an ant busy making more money and accumulating resources. When rainy days come, he has no lack. He feels secured even when challenges and difficulties come. The thing that frustrates Solomon is leaving everything after death to someone who is a fool or lazy. The thought that ‘sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it.’ Is vanity and great evil for Solomon.

What’s the use of working hard when we can’t enjoy the fruit of our labor? What’s the use of accumulating money, working very hard with little rest, and sacrificing health? If it would be others who would benefit from all these after death?

The issue is the misunderstanding of the purpose of life. Diligence in work to accumulate things is risky to our soul but it is not the issue. The purpose of diligence and obtaining the fruit of our labor is the issue. Is it for ourselves alone? Or, is it to serve others also? We are blessed in order to bless others. And, it is using our resources for others to know the Lord. This is investing our resources in the souls of men for God’s glory. Jesus says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”[Mat 6:19-21]

God’s Word for Today
3 June, 2026

12 So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

-Ecc 2:12-17 ESV

WHY THEN HAVE I BEEN SO VERY WISE?

Obviously, a wise person has a lot of advantages than a fool. A wise person is able to see clearly what lies ahead[v.4,5] The one who lives in the light is always better than he who is in darkness. A wise person may have a secured life in this world than a fool. Wisdom may contribute to his successes in his education, trade, business, and family. They are admirable. They will stand out for their achievements in life.

Despite the advantages of wisdom, death is the "one event" that befalls both the wise and the foolish. Everything comes to an end. This makes the "advantage" of wisdom feel fleeting or meaningless in the long run. Solomon asks, “Why then have I been so very wise?” The obsession of becoming wise to the detriment of relationships means nothing.

Death is the equalizer of men. Regardless of social and economic status, everyone will return to dust. Thus, we must not be obsessed by the any pursuit in this life for the sake of it. We must understand that life here on earth is temporary. We must recognize that using these things to serve God is the wisest thing to do. Strive to develop your relationship with God; serve Him according to your giftedness and God receives the God’s glory.

God’s Word for Today
2 June, 2026

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” 3 I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. 4 I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. 6 I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.
9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

-Ecc 2:1-11 ESV

THE VANITY OF SELF-INDULGENCE

Solomon has achieved more in his lifetime than anybody. He said, “So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also, my wisdom remained with me.”[v.9] Yet, he concluded that these experiences and accolades are vain. He said, “I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure. “What use is it?”[v.2] He indulged in wine for happiness.[v.3] He pursued great works in building gardens and luxurious homes.[v.5,6] He accumulated wealth. [v.7,8]

There was nothing that he did not excel. He claims, “And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.”[v.10]
Yet, there is void in his soul. He sighs, “Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.”[v.11] Physical pleasures and material achievements are temporary. They are incapable of satisfying the human soul. Life is short.[v.3] While not saying pleasure is wrong, Solomon warns that making it the primary goal of life results in empty, short-lived satisfaction.
