In Numbers 25, Israel’s spiritual adultery and betrayal is met with God’s righteous anger. But God also provides grace amidst judgment, so that justice is meted out and His anger can be turned away.

In brazen and unrepentant sin, Zimri, an Israelite man brought Cozbi, a Midianite woman to his family. Phinehas, a priest, jealous with God’s jealousy, acted against the couple and turned God’s anger away from Israel.

Being completely committed to Israel, God commanded Moses to strike down the Midianites, plotters who were threatening the marriage between God and his people.

Don’t desire evil as they did! (1 Corinthians 10:6-8). Brazen, unrepentant hearts lead to judgment - God's righteous anger will be revealed fully at final judgment.

Will we also recognise our need for a jealous priest who makes atonement for us? Hebrews 7 tells us this is fulfilled in Jesus, who came to turn away God's righteous anger. At the cross, God's anger was poured out on Him, so that mercy might be shown to God's unfaithful people, making peace between God and us.

How then should we respond to our own repeated failures? Not with resignation nor determination. Instead, recognise our great need for Jesus, who atones for us, and whose work alone secures our covenant relationship with God.

As Christians, how secure is God's promise to bring us home? That's the question that confronts readers as we enter Numbers 22 to 24.

The new generation of Israel are a people who trust in God, eager to enter the land. Yet, they encounter Balaam, a sorcerer hired by the king of Moab to curse Israel. In God's sovereignty, He does not permit Balaam to curse Israel.

Instead, Balaam can only do what God commands, and speaks three blessings over Israel. These blessings remind Israel that God has chosen them, and set them apart. The God who brought them out of Egypt is the same God who will bring them to the Promised Land. Israel's security rests in God's unchanging faithfulness to His promise. Because of God's faithfulness, Israel will be invincibly secure, solely because God's presence is with them.

As we look into the New Testament, we come to know who God's ultimate King is — King Jesus, who has removed Satan, sin, and death; obstacles that block our way to God. Through Jesus, God's promise to Abraham has come to us — to bring us back to Him.

Though Satan threatens God's people with internal affliction and external opposition alike, he cannot curse what God is determined to bless. May we be assured that God's promise is completely secure because He is faithful to work His sovereign power for us through Jesus, His chosen King!

The first generation of leaders who have led Israel since their slavery in Egypt had died. The new generation of Israelites complained just as their forefathers did, with the same unbelief and testing of God. How would God’s people make it to the promised land? Yet, God continued to provide for them.

When God asked Moses to speak to a rock to bring forth water, Moses struck the rock instead. Moses’ disobedience misrepresented God's character, resulting in God's judgement. If Moses can’t enter the promised land, who can?

If all this were not enough, the Israelites were blocked by the Edomites on their way to Canaan. Israel's chances of entering the promised land were looking poor.

But we see in Numbers 21, that for the first time since leaving Egypt, the Israelites started addressing God directly and trusted in God's power to fight for them. As a result, God gave the Canaanites over to them and they moved closer to the promised land.

When they relapsed into complaining, they confessed their sins and repented, showing spiritual progress in turning to God. God was gracious to provide healing amidst His judgement. The Israelites acknowledged God's provision for them and began to trust Him more. They asked for God's help and He powerfully defeated their enemies.

How will we make it to the new creation?
By trusting in God who is faithful and gracious to us. Numbers 21 shows us how God’s people face real opposition, suffering and weakness. And yet God sustains them forward as they trust Him.
