"The only true measure of God's goodness is what happened to Jesus, not what happens to us. We must measure God's goodness by what happened to Jesus, because in that cross, he is displaying his love to those who have turned their backs to him. What you think is the worst thing that has happened to you may not be the worst thing that has happened to you. The worst thing that could happen to you is that you are separated from God—alienated from him, and without any access to him, and Jesus endured the worst thing. Because on the cross, he cried out: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" He was forsaken by God, so that no matter what happens to you in this life, you will not be left, you will not be abandoned, you will not be forsaken. So let's define God's goodness less by what happens to us. Let's define God's goodness by what happened to Jesus."

And this is the blessing that we can presently enjoy and partake in in our time in this hostile world. What does this look like? Being united in the gospel allows us to look at one another not as strangers, not even merely just as friends, but as family—brothers and sisters in Christ who have been united by the precious blood of Jesus and whose veins flow with love and grace."
