SUZANNE ARRIVES IN AUCKLAND

On this day in 1860, Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert finally landed in Auckland after a long and arduous journey of almost four months from France.

Her voyage was not without difficulties, as it was made on a whaling ship unfit for passengers and without the best conditions, and it would later be labelled as a voyage that would test her courage.

On board the ‘General Teste’ there were 23 new missionaries including Bishop Pompallier and three other Frenchwomen: Lucie Pompallier, Antoinette Deloncle, and Peronille Droguet.

They caught their first glimpse of New Zealand on the morning of 19 December 1860, and went on to celebrate Christmas Day near Cook Strait.

The waiting crowds in Auckland were delighted to welcome their bishop, and a Maori hand was the first to be extended to Suzanne as she stepped ashore.
