EUROPE FACES DEMOGRAPHIC DECLINE AS THE CHURCH REAFFIRMS THE CENTRALITY OF FAMILY LIFE
Europe is confronting a sustained decline in birth rates alongside growing concerns about the social and cultural implications for future generations. Speaking at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV called attention to what he described as a “drastic sterility,” urging a renewed appreciation for the role of the family in shaping the moral and demographic future of society.
He cautioned that certain contemporary policy approaches risk devaluing motherhood and weakening the conditions necessary for family formation, while reaffirming marriage and openness to life as foundational to social stability.
Emphasizing that “children are the future,” the Pope appealed to European leaders and institutions to re-examine policies affecting families and to restore support for environments where life and hope can flourish.
