*PARTAKING OF DIVINE NATURE*
*TEXT:* 2 PETER 1:1-4.
1.Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
*Timeless Truth*_"Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust"_ (2 Peter 1:4).
*INTRODUCTION*
The image of Adam at creation was in the image of God. After Adam fell, the nature of Adam was corrupted by the nature of Satan and like a virus, man's nature became totally evil. This fact is repeated in many passages of the Scriptures. Our experiences of natural evil tendencies also confirm the depravity of human nature. So the nature of man is now called Adamic nature, having lost the nature of God. Man, through Christ only, can gain that lost nature of God. All the power and resources of heaven have been available for the fallen man so that he can possess and enjoy the favour of God again. This important revelation is the main lesson to learn in the text.
*1. Blessed Transformation by Christ*
a. Simon was the name given to Peter at birth while Peter was given by Jesus. He was characterised by impulsiveness, strong self-confidence, pride and outspokenness. It was a name that described his domineering rock-like actions and dispositions before he was transformed by Christ (John 1:42). As at the time he was writing, definite transformations had happened in his life. We feel it from his writings. *"Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ"*. The better translation for servants in our modern context is a born slave. A born slave is someone whose life, aspirations and activities are totally controlled by the Master. For a person who dined and related with Jesus to be calling himself a born slave of Christ is an indication that he saw something unique in Christ, encountered his transformative power and received transformation from Him. It is a testimony to the fact that no matter how corrupted our nature may be, when Jesus is allowed, He will transform the nature from Adamic to divine. The ease with which Peter was transformed shows that Jesus knows the problem of man and the solution. The confused, violent, peaceless and wicked world will be changed and transformed when Jesus is allowed in the lives of every person. Jesus is the hope of the world. Peter directed his letter to those who have experienced Christ knowing fully well that the deep things of the Scriptures will not profit the unbelievers. In fact, *"the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those that believeth not"*.
*"Peter to them that have obtained like precious faith with us"*. The Christian faith is precious because it is the mighty faith that connects the natural man to the supernatural God. The faith is in the precious Saviour and the outcome blessings cannot be imagined. What is the origin of this faith? Is it by human power, wisdom, education, skills or talent? It is *"through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ"*. It is solely from Christ. So nobody needs any qualification to tap into the resource except faith in Christ. Nobody can then boast of anything in the Christian faith and if any will boast, it cannot be before God. So then, receiving this precious faith is not dependent on status, race, gender, education, positions etc. It is only a matter of faith in Christ. Also observe that Peter made it clear that Jesus is God.
b. *"Grace and peace be multiplied unto you"*. Grace has to do with the greatness of God manifested in different spheres of human life. Peace is one of the results of receiving grace. When the two gifts are multiplied in the life of a person, it is a great happy and pleasant experience. This is what the world lacks that makes it what it is. How does man become a possessor of this grace and peace? How did Peter receive these blessings and gifts? *"Through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord"*. Revelation knowledge of God and Christ through His Word and the enablement of the Holy Spirit is the route. The more the knowledge of the truth, the more heavenly grace and peace are bestowed into human souls.
*Question*
What do you do to make sure you are increasing in the knowledge of Christ?
*2. Biblical Treasures for Christians*
a. The treasures God has provided for the saints are both inexhaustible and all encompassing. Those treasures are proportional to His power. *"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness"*. The same power that created the universe and every thing in it, such that everything is abundantly sufficient and there is no need to create new things again, is the same power at work. All the things we need in this life to be happy and live the godly and holy lives pleasing to God have been made provision for by God. He has not only created them but has also given them to us. It is possible for someone to create something and the person is still hoarding such things. But God has created and made them available to all those who believe.
b. How do we access all these wonderful blessings?
*"Through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue"*. It is easy to see the pivotal position of knowledge of Christ in enjoying the riches of heaven. It is that same knowledge that gives us eternal life. *"This is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent"* (John 17:3). All other blessings become accessible through knowledge of Christ and faith in that revelation knowledge. Thus, you may not be enjoying the best of God as a result of lack of adequate knowledge of Christ and faith in that revelation knowledge. If you cling to a distorted view of Christ, you are cheating yourself.
*Question*
Are you aware and enjoying those inexhaustible blessings Christ has prepared for your life?
*3. Beneficial Tremendousness for the Corruption-free*
The promises of God are given to show divine willingness and readiness for anybody who strongly desires to access the divine blessings and provision needed for life and eternity. *"Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises"*. The promises define the character of God. They are exceedingly great and precious. Something can be great and not precious whereas something can be precious and not great. The promises of God combine both. The Giver of the promises is both great and precious. The impacts of the promises are both great and precious. The power backing up the promises are both great and precious. Why are those promises given? *"That by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature."* The divine nature is holy, unstoppable, undefeated, always prosperous, graceful, virtuous and blessed. Those promises are meant to transfer these precious attributes of divine nature into the lives of the believers. Who are those who are entitled to this divine nature? *"Having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust"*. They are those who are freed from worldly corruptions which manifest in the form of evil and immoral lusts.
*Question*
How many of these promises are you holding on to by faith?
