WHEN CHURCH BECOMES A CULT OF MEMBERSHIP: THE CRY FOR THE UNITY OF CHRIST'S BODY
One of the greatest burdens in my heart is to witness a day when every genuine church in a city will gather together as one family—not to compete, not to compare, not to count members—but to lift one voice in worship to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Sadly, many people have joined what they call a church without realising they have been initiated into a system that is driven more by loyalty to a denomination than loyalty to Christ. The battle is no longer for souls; for many, it has become a battle for membership.
Today, many believers introduce themselves by their denomination before they identify themselves as followers of Jesus Christ. A believer should be able to worship in another Bible-believing church and still be embraced as family, not viewed as a prospect to recruit or a threat to retain.
The pastors, teachers, prophets, and evangelists were given by God to equip the saints, reveal Christ, and strengthen the Body—not to divide it.
Imagine a father with three children. He hires a teacher to educate them. Instead of teaching them that they are one family with the same father and the same inheritance, the teacher begins to separate them. He tells one child, "You are different. Your brother is not your family. Build your own identity apart from him." As the years pass, those children grow up, raise families, and completely forget they came from the same father.
This is exactly what has happened in many places within the Body of Christ.
Instead of reminding believers that we have one Father, one Saviour, one Spirit, one faith, and one hope, many have been taught to see other believers as outsiders simply because they worship in a different assembly.
This was never the desire of Jesus Christ.
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus continually revealed our oneness in the Father. He prayed that we would be one, just as He and the Father are one. He taught unity, love, and fellowship among believers. He never intended His Church to be fragmented by pride, competition, and denominational superiority.
What if a believer walks into your church and says, "I worship at another church"?
Instead of asking, "Can we make you our member?" imagine responding with joy:
"Glory to God! How is our family over there? We are grateful to know the Lord is moving among you."
That is the language of the Kingdom.
The mission is not to gather members into our own camps. The mission is to bring souls into the Kingdom of God.
The Church is one Body.
We are one family.
We share one bloodline—the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
Until the Church understands this truth, the enemy will continue to exploit our divisions. A divided Church cannot fully demonstrate the power of Christ to the world.
There is power in unity.
The devil fears a united Church because a united Church is unstoppable.
This is why division has become one of his greatest weapons. Whenever believers are separated by pride, competition, or unhealthy denominational loyalty, the advance of God's Kingdom is weakened.
It is time for the Church to return to the heart of Christ.
Let us stop competing and start completing one another.
Let us stop building personal kingdoms and start advancing God's Kingdom.
Let us remember that before we belong to a denomination, we belong to Christ.
We are one Body.
We are one Family.
We are one in Christ Jesus.
