The permanent Anglican presence in Rome, representing the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Holy See and promoting dialogue between Anglicans and Roman Catholics. The Anglican Centre has provided a permanent Anglican presence in Rome, ensured that the Archbishop of Canterbury has an ‘on-the-spot’ representative to the Holy See, and welcomed innumerable pilgrims and scholars. The Centre has enabled the building of mature relationships between the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church, and supported the theological dialogue between the two. Locally, the Centre works closely with other denominations here in Rome, most especially with the Methodist Ecumenical Office, Rome and the representative of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Today, building on the momentous progress in pursuing its mission to promote Christian unity in a divided world, the Centre is developing in a number of ways which include:

* Educational courses - for laity, clergy and those in training
* Hospitality – the Centre welcomes visitors from across the globe; last year alone over 2,500 people from 16 countries and five continents visited the Centre
* Prayer – the Centre sustains a community of clergy and laity offering prayer for unity and reconciliation between the Churches
* Common Witness – the Centre pioneers an ecumenical approach to tackling social injustices of our world, particularly in relation to modern day slavery and human trafficking.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be highlighting some of our YouTube playlists which bring together stories of Anglicans and Catholics working together, and projects within the Anglican Communion which may be encouraging for you and others. Please check each one out!

Our first in this series - Honouring Martyrs - covers initiatives in Westminster and Rome in honour of Christians who have given their lives for faith in Jesus. Readers may already know the two scenes below well - the statues of modern martyrs over the Great West Door at Westminster Abbey, and the icon from the Basilica of St Bartholomew on Tiber Island.

A special ecumenical prayer service at the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls on Friday evening (23 October 2026) commemorated the first anniversary of the State Visit by HM King Charles III and HM Queen Camilla to the Holy See.

In his words of welcome, Cardinal James Harvey recalled that a year ago, His Majesty was welcomed officially as Royal Confrater of the Basilica and its Abbey.

Cardinal Harvey added: “Extended with the consent of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, this gift of confraternity was a gesture of hospitality and spiritual fellowship, reflecting the historic links between the English monarchy and this place, and the deep friendship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England.

“Today, as we recall the royal visit of one year ago, let us also pray for health and wholeness for Pope Leo and King Charles. May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, Healer and Giver of Life, uphold them and sustain them along the path of service to which they have been called.”

Following an address by the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Ms Tammy Sandhu MBE, Benedictine Abbot Dom Donato Ogliari OSB prayed: “God our Father, source of all consolation, inspired by the life and teaching of Saint Paul the Apostle, we come before you, to praise your name and to seek your blessing.

“May we, like Saint Paul, live in Christ your Son, who loved us and gave his life for us. Give us the grace to be apostles of the Gospel in the darkness of our times, imitating Paul, just as he imitated Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

The State Visit included morning prayers in the Sistine Chapel – the first public time of prayer by the Pope and a British monarch since the Reformation – and the conferment, on King Charles, of the title of Royal Confrater of Saint Paul in the Basilica.

A special chair in the Basilica, crafted for the King’s participation in the event, bears the British royal coat of arms and John 17:21 in Latin – Ut unum sint (That they may be one).

Sung worship was led by the monks of the Abbey, and the service was attended by representatives of Christian traditions in Rome at the invitation of the British Embassy to the Holy See.

The latest update from ARCIC's work on Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue with a new document due to be published in the coming months. Please take note if you are in leadership or interested in studying this step forward in our shared relationship.

"When published, this Agreed Statement will complement the first document published by ARCIC III, 'Walking Together on the Way: Learning to be the Church – Local, Regional and Universal' (2018). With the finalisation of its second Agreed Statement, ARCIC III has now completed its work in response to the mandate it received from the late Pope Benedict XVI and Archbishop Rowan Williams, to study ‘the Church as Communion, local and universal, and how in communion the local and universal Church come to discern right ethical teaching."
