โ€œIn the beginning, God created the heavens and the earthโ€ (Gen 1:1). ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆโ€™๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต (โ€œIn the beginningโ€) is the first word with which biblical revelation opens. Millennia of exegesis have not yet exhausted all its richness and its countless meanings. It is now well established, however, that the expression is not so much to be understood as the temporal beginning of creation as the origin that reveals meaning. By going โ€œback to the beginning,โ€ we understand how reality, in its original structure, has a profound relationship with God, its native Source and its ultimate Meaning. In the first pages of Genesis, creation takes place through acts of separation: the earth from the heavens, night from dayโ€ฆ Creation thus affirms difference. Not only that, but creation sees the emergence of difference as a value. History, however, has experienced the struggle of humanity to recognize this. In fact, throughout its course (and up to the present day), we have unfortunately witnessed the alternating encounter and conflict between God and humankind, between man and woman, between brother and brother, between son and father, and between people and people. But why is accepting otherness among humans so problematic and difficult? And what path is possible to restore brotherhood? Todayโ€™s Gospel passage offers us some valuable insights. Matthew presents the life of the Christian community with great realism, without downplaying the conflicts and tensions that can arise within it. In 18:15โ€“20, he highlights how to restore a brother who has sinned. The first step is If it is accepted, and a relationship is established, the brother is restored. But there may also be stubbornness, in which case one must If even this attempt fails, But there may be cases where even the community fails. Then Matthew writes: โ€œIf he will not listen even to the community, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collectorโ€ (cf. Mt 18:17). At the ecclesial level, this expression indicates the act of excommunication. It is not a formula of condemnation but the recognition of a broken communion, a severed bond, a rift in the community. From this comes an important insight: ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, in which we experience not only the Fatherโ€™s goodness but also the Lordโ€™s presence at the heart of community life. In him, unity is always possible.

Jesusโ€™ words are extremely radical. Of those who wish to follow him, he asks for self-denial and the taking up of the cross. Let us pause to consider the first condition: โ€œIf anyone wishes to come after me, ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜บ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜งโ€ (Mt 16:24). What does Jesus mean by self-denial? Simply that the disciple no longer looks out for his own interests, no longer thinks of himself, just as the Master, forgetting himself, always keeps his mission and the fulfillment of the Fatherโ€™s plan in mind. Simone Weil wrote on this subject: โ€œWhen one recognizes oneself as nothing, then one finds oneโ€™s place in the whole.โ€ Yes, if the self, my self, is always at the center, there is disorder within me and around me; harmony is lacking. If I reposition myself where I ought to beโ€”and this within interpersonal relationshipsโ€”everything falls into place, and I am at peace. Christian discipleship, then, brings about the loss of the self; that exalted self which in reality never enriches but always isolates, and whose signs of imbalance can be found in the excessive insecurities of daily life, in phobias that risk becoming obsessive, in suspicion toward everything and everyone, and thus in the fear that makes us violent. And there is so much violence among us, sometimes beginning with as little as a simple glance. Faith entails the willingness to embrace evangelical loss,as we have said, so that the newness of the Gospel may be the breath of our days. Let us ask ourselves: what would happen to our lives if we stopped interpreting every absence as a void and thus avoided jostling to have everything and be above others; if we stopped interpreting every lack as a void to be filled and thus knew how to live in anticipation. What would that be? Following Christ then entails a passage through irreversible loss, the loss of thinking and wanting at all costs to always be at the center of the relational universe. Are we then willing, for Christโ€™s sake, to lose what we defend most in order to find our place in the whole?

Se qualcuno vuol ve**re dietro a me,

Jesusโ€™ question, โ€œWho do you say that I am?โ€ (Mt 16:15), is met with various answers. For some, Jesus is John the Baptistโ€”that is, ๐˜ข ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค; for others, Elijah, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต against idolatry. Then there are those who recognize in Jesus ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜‘๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฉ, a righteous man who suffers. Finally, Peter steps forward with his profession of faith: โ€œYou are the Christ, the Son of the living Godโ€ (Mt 16:16). For Peter, Jesus is the (Christ) who brings salvation and therefore freedom. Not only that, but also the ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ (๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆรณ๐˜ด ๐˜ปรด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ), the Son of a God who lives, continually generates life, acts in time and history, and brings fruitfulness to events and situations. This is an important point because it helps us understand that it is not enough to make fine professions of faith; it is necessary to experience what one believes and professes. Jesus then calls Peter โ€œblessedโ€ and says to him: โ€œYou are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against itโ€ (Mt 16:18). In its interpretation, the Eastern Church follows Origenโ€™s reading, namely that the rock upon which Jesusโ€”and no one elseโ€”builds the Church is Peterโ€™s ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ, not his person. Augustine, however, interprets it differently, affirming that the rock upon which the Church is built is Christ himself. The Apostle Paul will in fact call Christ โ€œthe rockโ€ (cf. 1 Cor 10:4). If Peter and Jesusโ€™ disciples were to be inspired not from above but by flesh and bloodโ€”that is, by human interestsโ€”the Church would no longer serve the Lord but another master. If Peter and Jesusโ€™ disciples were to be inspired by a thirst for domination and power, they would no longer be a solid foundation upon which humanity could build its salvation, but would become a stumbling block and a cause of offense. If Peter and Jesusโ€™ disciples were to remain silent in the face of governmental injustices, the arrogance of the rich, and unjust and inequitable laws, there would no longer be the Church of Jesus, but of another. But even if Peter and Jesusโ€™ disciples were to betray their mission, God will never allow a single fragment of humanity inspired from above to be lacking, so that the Church of Jesus may be a prophetic presence in the world.

There is a truly remarkable woman in the Gospels, the Canaanite woman (cf. Mt 15:21-28; Mk 7:24-30). She is of Greek and Syro-Phoenician origin, a foreigner to the Jewish people and therefore a pagan. This woman has a sick daughter, tormented by a demon. She is thus a distressed mother, though not a desperate one. This makes her similar to so many mothers around the world. Faced with suffering, she plays her last card: she goes to Jesus, whom she had likely heard about. It doesnโ€™t matter that she belongs to another faith. When she sees him, she cries out: โ€œHave mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demonโ€ (Mt 15:22). What might the expression โ€œSon of Davidโ€ have meant to her? She certainly recognizes Jesusโ€™ royal lineage. King David was known even to the peoples of the ancient Near East. But there are some curious aspects to highlight. This woman, Matthew states, โ€œcame from that regionโ€ (Tyre and Sidon). In a sense, she is undertaking a sort of exodus. The woman begins to detach herself from her ancient traditions, to leave that land where she had found no answer to her suffering. She is, therefore, a courageous woman, ready to reexamine her existential and faith-based choices. She does not even fear being judged harshly, being a nuisance, and perhaps, for this reason, being humiliated and driven away. There is more: she does not even stop in the face of Jesusโ€™ indifference, of his silence. On the contrary, she continues to follow him and to cry out. And here her greatness emerges: a pagan, a worshipper of idols, knows how to endure the Masterโ€™s silence, knows how to listen to him, and intuits that beyond the harsh appearances there is a mercy possible for her and for her daughter. Jesusโ€™ initial indifference is striking: โ€œBut he did not even speak a word to herโ€ (Mt 15:23), and when he opens his mouth, he has a very harsh word: โ€œI was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israelโ€ (Mt 15:24). But this mother does not give up; she does not remain silent but implores for mercy: โ€œLord, help me!โ€ (Mt 15:25). In response, she receives an insult: โ€œIt is not right to take the childrenโ€™s bread and throw it to the little dogsโ€ (Mt 15:26). The response has a certain contemptuous tone. The term โ€œdog,โ€ โ€œlittle dogs,โ€ as is well known, refers to pagan impurity. Jesus reiterates that he has been sent (by God) to the house of Israel. And here a surprising turn of events occurs, where the roles are reversed: the pagan Canaanite woman, who goes beyond the Masterโ€™s indifference and rebuke, has something to teach himโ€”namely, she helps him become aware of his universal mission, gently compelling him, at the same time, to perform the healing of her daughter: โ€œIt is true, Lord,โ€ said the woman, โ€œyet even the little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their mastersโ€™ tableโ€ (Mt 15:27). The woman accepts that she has no part in the feast of the children; she knows she has no right to it. But the crumbs are enough for herโ€”that is, she does not want everything, she does not want the best part, but only what is left over and might even be thrown away. Hadnโ€™t twelve baskets full of bread been left over after the first multiplication? Bread, at the banquet of the Kingdom, is not counted. There is enough for everyone and in abundance. No one runs the risk of being left without. Of course, Jesus knows this well, but he does not want to rush the timing inscribed in the Fatherโ€™s plan. Yet this woman reminds him that this time has come. God has a place even for the Gentiles at his banquet of life, because he is the Father of all. Jesus is struck by this and accepts this womanโ€™s lesson as a word of God that urges him to open himself to all.

Anzi, continua a seguirlo e a gridare. ยป (Mt 15,25). Il termine ยซcaneยป, ยซcagnoliniยป rimanda come รจ noto allโ€™impuritร  pagana.

On this Sunday, which marks the memorial of Edith Stein, we turn our attention to this extraordinary figure, highlighting a message of hers that is highly relevant today. Yes, because Edith has much to say to us as well. Let us begin with a question that often crosses our minds: โ€œWill I be able to hold it all together? To maintain my inner unity amid the tangle of the many commitments that await me each day?โ€ This question visits us in the dead of night, when sleep wonโ€™t come, or in the early morning, when the duties of the new day catch up with us with their demands, which sometimes allow for no delay or procrastination. Weโ€™ve been told since childhood that we must make plans, think about tomorrow, build careers, and work to forge professional, profitable, emotional, and even competitive relationships. But how is it possible to keep everything under control without falling into anxiety? We must realize that having everything under control, though it may seem commendable, does not depend exclusively on us, nor on our resourcefulness or managerial skills. Edith, like each of us, grappled with this expectation, dismantling it piece by piece. She writes: โ€œIt is necessary to live hand in hand with the Lord.โ€ With this phrase, which is in no way pietistic, Edith acknowledges that there is an art we must master, and that is knowing how to ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ด to God, and also to our neighbor. And this is the hardest thing, for how many of us truly know how to ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ด to others and to the Most High? And here Edith offers us a second lesson: do not plan for the next day. We read in a letter: โ€œMy life begins anew in the morning and ends in the evening. I have no plans or long-term goals.โ€ Be careful, this is a phrase that must be understood well. Planning is part of daily life; organization is essential for living in an orderly way, but it must not be a primary concern. Edith, I repeat, is not saying that plans should not be made, but that they must not completely steal the present in the name of the future. For her, it is necessary ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต with something or someone and not to fret over managing things. This ability ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต gives quality to what we do, as we learn to act without being consumed by doing and in communion with others. Sometimes we say: โ€œI could have done more.โ€ But Edith would reply: โ€œIt is not up to me to hold the world together. Heaven knows how to economize.โ€ So it is not up to me to tally what has been done, but to entrust myself, in faith, to God, who indeed knows how to economize. This is not shirking responsibility but the ability not to confuse personal responsibility with performance anxiety. A third aspect: it is necessary ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ, the hour before. Yes, because when we wake up we are immediately seized by thoughts: I have this to do, that other thing to finishโ€ฆ Edith urges calm. The first hours of the day belong to God. This is the time when, little by little, we learn to place our hand in His hand through listening, prayer, and reflection. The day will be positively sustained and nourished by this, and thus we will have a greater capacity to welcome the various realities we will encounter. In the morning, it is essential to meet with the support of our very being.

Ed รจ la cosa piรน difficile perchรฉ quanti tra noi sanno veramente affidarsi allโ€™altro e allโ€™Alto?

There is one thing Jesus does often: With this gesture, he accompanies his actions, his relationships, the simple moments of daily life, and the solemn and mysterious hours of the night. He does this even in the presence of those who provoke him, tempt him, or insult him. In this way, he does not merely look toward the place from which he came, but seeks to turn toward his inner orientation: the Father, whom he senses as both near and far, present and absent, and in whom he has such boundless trust that he is not even touched by the impossibility of feeding a multitude of men and women in the desert. Looking at the sky is also an important anthropological act because in this way one understands the distance between man and God; but not only that, it expresses, in its simplicity, the dimensions of existence while respecting the proportions of lifeโ€™s realities. If one does not look at the sky, it is impossible to measure life correctly. There is an illuminating verse on this subject by M. Anna Maria Cร nopi, OSB, in which her deep bond with God shines through, perceived in part through the stirrings of nature:

I love the sky
I like the sky more and more.
(...)
I have nothing
when I look at myself and look at it
it is mine.

First and foremost, the reciprocity of the gaze emerges. Looking at the sky is neither passive nor alienating, but mysteriously marks an encounter. The sky looks, looks at us, thus suggesting that God, the Father, envelops our little soul. He, the infinite, as Leopardi would say. One feelsโ€”and it is paradoxicalโ€”that one has nothing and at the same moment possesses everything.

Io non ho nulla
quando mi guardo e lo guardo

Lui, lโ€™infinitร , come direbbe Leopardi.
