Today is Pentecost, when the Church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of its mission in the world.

In the Gospel, the risen Christ comes to his disciples in their fear and uncertainty, speaking peace and breathing his Spirit upon them. What was closed and guarded is opened, and those who were afraid are sent out with purpose and authority.

Pentecost reminds us that the life of the Church is sustained by the presence of the Holy Spirit, who brings peace, renews our hearts and sends us out to share the good news.

Scripture reading: John 20:19–22

‘When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”’

Prayer

Holy Spirit,
you come to us in our fear
and fill us with peace and new life.
Breathe your life into your Church,
renew our hearts
and send us out in faith and courage.
Help us to share the good news of Christ
in word and in action,
guided by your presence.

Amen.

Ascension Day
On the 40th day of the Easter season we celebrate Ascension Day, which commemorates our Lord Jesus Christ's ascension into Heaven.

Ascension Day not only marks the completion of Christ's earthly ministry and the fulfilment of His mission, but encourages us to look forward in hope at His promised return when all things will be restored.

COLLECT
Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

THE GOSPEL — St. Mark 16.14-end
Jesus appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

"The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” John 12:12,13

Tomorrow we will have the pleasure of welcoming Revd Charles Pickstone, who is going to be chaplain at St. Leonard's for the next two Sundays.

Originally from Manchester, Revd Pickstone trained at Mirfield and was ordained in Chester cathedral in 1981. A short bio in his own words:
"My first curacy was in central Birkenhead, and then in 1984, after a happy summer looking after St George’s Paris during an interregnum, went to London to become Priest in charge of St Matthew’s, Camberwell and Senior Curate at St Giles’s Camberwell, where Helen and I met and married, and had our first child (of three), James.

In 1989 I became Vicar of St Laurence Catford, where I stayed until my retirement last May, much enjoying being Vicar of a vibrant and diverse parish at the heart of the London Borough of Lewisham, probably one of the most diverse places on the planet.

When not saying mass, I am also an art critic, writing mainly for religious publications such as Art & Christianity and Shibboleth, and recently came runner-up in the International Awards for Art Criticism for a piece about Hamad Butt, a Muslim artist who died in 1994.

I was last in Assisi in 2011, leading a pilgrimage group for whom I celebrated a memorable eucharist at St Leonard’s, and I’m much looking forward to returning."

Please join us in welcoming Revd Pickston and his wife Helen on Lord's day tomorrow at 11 am, at St. Leonard's Assisi.

🔴 Dear friends of St. Leonards, seeing the continuing, extraordinary situation of the city of Assisi during the 800th anniversary of St. Francis' death, the church council took the decision to keep St. Leonard's closed this Sunday, 8 March, as well.
