Wilton Parish Church

Wilton Parish Church Wilton Parish Church - stands at the heart of Wilton, the ancient capital of Wessex! In the Buildings of England this church is described as a tour de force.

It is both the spiritual home to a warm, inclusive Christian family; and an architectural gem, attracting visitors from across the world. This monumental church was completed in 1845 and replaced the medieval church of St Mary which stands in the market place, although the nave is a ruin. The architects of the church are Wyatt and Brandon, and the builders D & B Jones (Bradford on Avon, Wilts): th

e building was paid for by Hon Sidney Herbert (later Lord Herbert of Lea) and his mother Catherine (nee Woronstow) Dowager Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery at a cost of £20,000.00. The church is built in brick, faced with Bath stone above a Portland plinth. This style of church building, which favours the return to the use of round arches, was first encountered on the continent (Germany); it became popular in England in the 1840s. The actual period reflected in the style could be Early Christian, Byzantine, Italian Romanesque or Norman; here at Wilton the Lombardic style was chosen. It was inspired by the churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria, near Viterbo, Italy. Externally there is a separate campanile some 33 metres (108 ft.) high and the flight of six steps at the west entrance are around 30 metres wide. The interior contains glass from the 12th and 13th centuries and other important items obtained by the Herberts from the continent. Capitals to the columns in the nave were carved by William Osmond (Junior) of Salisbury. In the chancel the pavement is by Mr Singer, and the mosaics of the chancel apse are by Gertrude Martin to designs by Sir Charles Nicholson. Under the chancel there is a crypt which is used as a burial chamber for the Herbert family.

A Prayer on the 4th Anniversary of the Invasion of Ukraine

Almighty and Great God, accept our gratitude for your boundless mercy towards us. Hear the supplication of our afflicted hearts for the land and people of Ukraine, as they confront foreign aggression and invasion. Open the eyes of those who have been overtaken by a spirit of deception and violence, that they be horrified by their works. Grant victory over the powers of evil that have arisen and bless Ukraine with your gifts of liberty, peace, tranquility, and good fortune.

We implore you, O Merciful God, look with grace upon those who courageously defend their land. Remember the mothers and fathers, the innocent children, widows and orphans, the disabled and helpless, those seeking shelter and refuge, who reach out to you and to their fellow human beings looking for mercy and compassion. Bless the hearts of those who have already shown great generosity and solidarity, and those who prepare to receive their Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Ukraine’s greatest time of need. Bring us together as your children, your creation, and instill in us your strength, wisdom and understanding. May you be praised and glorified, now and forever, and to the ages of ages.

Amen
