Welcome to Emmanuel Church, reverent and reformed Christian worship in Salisbury, south west England. All are warmly invited to join us online for reverent and reformed Christian worship, marked by the faithful preaching of God’s Word and the gospel of salvation calling sinners to repen

tance and faith in Jesus Christ alone. Services are led by Rev John Thackway who has faithfully served as the church's pastor since 2021, having previously served for thirty years at Holywell Evangelical Church in North Wales. Pastor Thackway took up the pastorate at Emmanuel Church following the retirement of Rev Malcolm Watts after fifty years of faithful and beloved ministry among us. In 2025, Rev Daniel Tribe accepted the call to be our assistant pastor, after graduating from Salisbury Reformed Seminary and having grown up in Salisbury.

On Sunday morning, we were thankful for ministry from our Pastor. He started a series on Psalm 23, and started by speaking to us from verse 1: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Firstly, we saw a humbling profession - The metaphor found in this verse perfectly portrays Christ as the good Shepherd, but also perfectly portrays us as needy sheep. We are weak and prone to wonder, prone to fall into the same mistakes time and time again. We are in need of a Shepherd.
We see secondly, a Christ-centred profession - Christ condescends to be our Shepherd. “What is man, that thou art mindful of him.” (Psalm 8:4) He is above all, and yet bestows upon us His grace and mercy. He was the suffering Shepherd, who laid down His life for us, His sheep.
Thirdly we looked at knowing profession - There is mutual knowledge in this relationship. We know Him as sheep know their Shepherd. We should watch closely to follow His voice and not the voice of strangers. He also knows us perfectly, fully, and individually, as a Shepherd knows the needs of the sheep.
Finally, we saw a belonging profession - The Psalmist claims the Shepherd as his own. Can we say the same? As a Shepherd marks out his sheep, so Christ marks us out as His own, setting us apart from the world.

On Sunday evening our Pastor preached from Luke 4:40 “Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.”
Firstly we looked at the many diseases. The crowd of people who came to be healed was so large and the need was so widespread, and incurable by man’s means. Sin is the greatest of all diseases and these miracles performed in this chapter show us our need for Christ. Sin is not just a bodily sickness but a sickness of the heart. The cause of our sickness is from the fall of man, and without Christ every case is fatal. There is only one physician who can save us, and that is Christ, in whom we must have faith.

On Sunday morning, we were thankful for ministry from our Pastor. He spoke to us from 2 Kings 4:11-26, particularly focusing on the words in verse 26: “And she answered, It is well.”
Firstly, we saw great woman - We can draw many godly examples from this woman, described as “great woman” in verse 8. We see in this passage a woman constant and attentive in the worship of her God. She could be found regularly in God’s house and with His people, and used all her gifts for God’s glory. She was content with all that she had and submitted to God’s will and order.
We see secondly, a great trial - We must not be shocked that where God has given much grace, this will be greatly tried. These trials can come suddenly and touch close to the heart, but we have great reason not to fear: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”(‭‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭33‬) Not only do we know God’s promised presence with us, but we know that these trials are to purge us of sin and sanctify us for God’s glory.
Finally we looked at great faith - Her response to the question posed to her in verse 26 is one of great certainty and peace. If we are found in Christ, we can also say that all is well with us, despite hard trials. We know all things are for our good, and God is accomplishing His will. We can take example from this woman and run to God in our trials.

Last Sunday evening our Pastor preached from Psalm 73:18 “Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.”
This verse shows how there are some things that happen will only be understood when we reach the kingdom of God. It highlights the plight of the godless, and the slippery slopes of sinners. While they appear apparently prosperous, they are actually in a precarious situation. This is because sinners are blinded by their sin and largely do not see the problem with the way that they are living. Until grace opens their eyes, they are untroubled by their sin. The problem is that this prosperity is not built upon God’s favour, and is ultimately dangerous. We all have an appointed time of death, and it will happen regardless of whether you are ready or not. The only way to be saved is to turn to Christ and repent of your sins.

On Sunday morning, we were thankful for ministry from our Pastor. He spoke to us from Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Firstly, we looked at precious ground - The heart is the spiritual organ of our soul, which is the root of all our thoughts and desires. Its value far outweighs the value of anything we could acquire on earth. The state of our heart shows who we are, and while this may be hidden to others, it is not hidden to God. This precious ground rightfully belongs to God: “My son, give me thine heart” (Proverbs 23:26), if we are to have Christ on the throne in our heart, there must be no other rival.
We see secondly, a battle ground - This verse calls us to guard and protect our heart, watching carefully over the state of it. We face many attacks from sin and the world, we have an enemy: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬). If we find the throne of our heart taken by the enemy, the springs of joy, peace and comfort we have known will be stopped up. This is a personal warning because we are easily overcome and prone to wonder from God. We must know our heart, know our weaknesses and protect what we hear, speak, and the paths we take.

On the Lord’s Day morning our Pastor spoke on Jude 1:24 “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.”
We looked at this verse under two headings: grace and glory. Firstly, grace. God’s people have a fear and danger of falling into sin in the Christian life. There is much temptation, and we as sinners, are weak. The fact that it is so easy for us to fall into sin shows that we cannot keep ourselves up, and we need help. The help comes only from grace and Christ. Secondly, this grace of God will see us to glory. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can deliver us from every evil work and preserve us in the heavenly kingdom.

Rev. Dafydd Morris brought God’s Word to us last Saturday, speaking on Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
Firstly we saw, the church as the flock - the Lord Jesus Christ goes out to find His people. He is more zealous to find us than we were to get lost. We are found by the good Shepherd, given an ear to hear Him. By His grace our lives show that we belong to Him through our love for Him and His word. We are united together under Him and we must remain united against the wolves that seek to divide the Church. We must not bring harm to the church because it is the body of Christ.
We see secondly, the pastor - the elders and the pastor have a joint role to ensure the flock is spiritually fed. The pastor is called to voice the truth. With wisdom given from God, a pastor must take heed of himself, must feed the flock and preach the Lord Jesus Christ and His Gospel of grace. Without this good spiritual food we shall have no life. We can always come to the table of the Lord Jesus Christ and be spiritually fed but we must come to church hungry for the word of God and His presence among us.
Lastly we looked at the price of the Church - so willingly He walked up to the cross to pay the sacrifice for our sins so that we may be joined together before Him in church. Remember that Jesus’ life was the price of the church and therefore, the worth of it.
