Services in the Presteigne Group of Parishes on Sunday 1 November (All Saints) are as follows:

11.00 All Souls Service Presteigne

At the All Souls service we remember our departed loved ones, especially those who have died in the past year. We give thanks for them by name and pray for the bereaved. If you would like the names of any family members or friends to be read out during the service, you will have the opportunity to add them to our list as you arrive.

Please join us if you can join us for this moving and comforting service; it will be lovely to see you. If you are unable to be with us in person, but would like to remember loved ones no longer with us in quiet prayer and worship at home, you will find a version of the service on our page at A Church Near You, along with two appropriate readings.

If you would prefer not to mark All Souls by using the service, you can just use the readings, or you might prefer to use the collect and readings for All Saints Day, which are also attached.

A Reading for Sunday 25 October from St Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, chapter 3, verses 12-17

As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Bear with each other
and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.

Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
And over all these virtues put on love,
which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
since as members of one body you were called to peace.
And be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,
and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.

And whatever you do,
whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

A Reading for Sunday 18 October from St Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 22, verses 15-22

The Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap Jesus in his words.
They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.
“Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity
and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are.
Tell us then, what is your opinion?
Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said,
“You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?
Show me the coin used for paying the tax.”
They brought him a denarius, and he asked them,
“Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them,
“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s,
and to God what is God’s.”
When they heard this, they were amazed.
So they left him and went away.

On 21 October, it will be 60 years since the terrible Aberfan disaster, and no doubt there will be national events to commemorate this. But not everyone will know of Presteigne's connection to Aberfan and its tragedy.
The Revd. Kenneth Hayes was Pastor at Presteigne Baptist Church until 1964, when he moved with his wife Mona and their two sons to be Pastor of two chapels in South Wales - Merthyr Vale and Aberfan. Mr and Mrs Hayes's nine-year-old son Dyfrig was killed when the colliery tip collapsed on top of Pantglas School. Despite their grief, they made a great impact on the community by ministering to others and supporting other grieving parents.
The story of the Hughes family really is incredibly moving and will form the basis of this Sunday's service (18 October) at Presteigne Baptist Church. The service takes place at 10.30 am and will be led by the Very Revd Michael Tavinor. It will be based on hymns and readings used at Aberfan by Kenneth Hayes on the Sunday after the disaster, and there will be reflections and prayers.
Of course there are many people in Presteigne who remember Mr and Mrs Hayes, including Olwen, a member of the Baptist congregation, who was baptised by Mr Hayes. All are very welcome to join the Baptist community in this act of remembrance.

A Reading for Sunday from St Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, chapter 4, verses 1-8

My brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown,
stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!
I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord.
Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow,
help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel,
along with Clement and the rest of my fellow-workers, whose names are in the book of life.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Let your gentleness be evident to all.
The Lord is near.
Do not be anxious about anything,
but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable
– if anything is excellent or praiseworthy –
think about such things.
