How did your church/online service go today? Did it bless and encourage you?
We would love to hear in the comments.
Here is a summary of how the sermon spoke to me. If you have any insights please share in the comments.
At Frome Christian Fellowship George Litanueiks preached on 1 Peter 1.
Here is verses 13 to 16
Be Holy
13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
As the world gets darker and the signs that Jesus return is imminent we should indeed be sober and vigilant. We need to be like the 5 wise virgins, who had their lamps trimmed with oil. They were looking out for the Bridegrooms arrival. In Jewish marriage traditions the bride groom arrived when he had the home prepared for the couple to live in. He would sometimes arrive in the dead of the night with no prior warning. Let us be ready for the rapture when the bridegroom Jesus Christ comes for his church which is his bride or if it is sooner for the day we die.
Verse 14 really jumped out at me, 'As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance'
I think it could be so easy to partake of bad habits that God has been delivering us from through the power of his Holy spirit.
I think if we neglect spending time in prayer and bible study, we get weaker in our spirits and then the temptation to do things in our old ways before we knew Jesus, can creep up upon us and if we are not vigilant overcome us.
When this happens it is best not to beat ourselves up but to say sorry to God and be determined to get back into the word and prayer.
Spiritual Reminders for Your Journey
Renewing the Mind: Romans 12:2 reminds us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds rather than conforming to the patterns of the world.
A Way Out: 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God is faithful and will always provide a way out of temptation so you can endure it.
I believe God's way out is the power of his word, the power of his blood, the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of his name.
Revelation 12 v 11
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
Romans 8:11
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies ]through His Spirit who dwells in you.
In Christian teachings, this "resurrection power" is not just for the afterlife. It is believed to be available for daily life to provide strength, overcome sin and fear, and facilitate spiritual transformation.
Philippians 2:9
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
It’s like using the name of the president of a company – that name can get things done. It’s the same in the spirit realm, except that the Name of Jesus is higher – carries more weight -- than any other name
