Dear Church family and friends,

John 16:25-33 – the end of the Upper Room Discourse. Jesus explains everything, the disciples understand, and there is a happy end for everyone. Not quite. Jesus leaves his disciples with encouragement and reassurance because He knows the fear that will be in the disciples’ hearts. While they acknowledge that He is no longer speaking figuratively, this knowledge does nothing to comfort them. Listen again to Pastor Lucas’ reflections on this passage, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHUcjSXdAYI

This week in Church…

Dear Church family and friends,

Asking others for help can be difficult based on a number of differing factors: how the person asking feels about presenting their problem to another; what the issue is at all; and whether the person seeking assistance knows the person they are to get into contact with. For some it might come very easily, for others it may require an enormous amount of courage. There is of course another group of people who insist that they do not ever need the help from anyone. They are independent and can manage on their own, thank you very much. What all these people have in common, though, is the use of prayer. Even a non-believer might become so desperate that they, earnestly or not, turn to God with a fleeting “help me!”. Psalm 121 shows us what God does when He is called upon, no matter how you feel about expressing your need for help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBnFXxj7twk

Dear Church family and friends,
Perhaps you have been following our sermons for the last couple of weeks and thought “How does the ‘helper’ actually ‘help’?”. Pastor Buddy offered us one suggestion on Sunday, when he looked at John 16: 16-24… and the film ‘Apollo 13’…: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWF0nZQawDU.

Dear Church family and friends,

‘… and leaving the Spirit ‘til, the work on earth is done’
On Sunday, in our next instalment of our series in John, Pastor Lucas preached on chapter 16 verses 12 to 15. In this passage, Jesus continues to explain that the disciples will not be left alone after His time with them is over. Jesus’ part in God’s salvation plan is coming to a close, but there is still work to be done. To the disciples and even us nowadays, the Spirit remains a mystery yet we can see Him working every day in our lives. Like Jesus, the Spirit has many roles or functions – all of which are designed to glorify God: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UjTWfbLphU

Summer…
We at IBC Giessen love to meet together after service for food and at this time of year that means it is barbecue time! In around four weeks’ time, on 21st June, we will fire up the grill and serve up a tasty meal for everyone. All we ask is for contributions of salads, sides and desserts to go along with the sausages that the Church will provide. So that we do not end up with lots of leftovers, we would be thankful if you could get in touch if you plan on joining us.

Have a blessed week!

Dear Church family and friends,

This past Thursday we marked Jesus’ return to the Father in heaven (Ascension Day/Himmelfahrt). This coming Sunday and Monday, there will be a Bank Holiday to commemorate the sending of the Holy Spirit (Pfingsten/Pentecost). But why do we need the Holy Spirit, and what is its purpose? As Pastor Buddy explained in Sunday’s sermon, the Holy Spirit is a helper. With Jesus no longer physically by our side, it is His Spirit that guides, comforts and strengthens us. Our own plans are futile without it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFMMT2jTVk

Dear Church family and friends,
Put yourself in the shoes of Jesus’ disciples: you’ve had years under his guidance, a personal relationship with a real, living being. Then he leaves. Not only that, but he knows that he will not be around and tells you so multiple times; a person that you have grown to love and whose presence is an integral part of your own life, no longer there. Naturally, your first question would be ‘what do we do?’. Thousands of years later, we know to ‘live by faith and not by sight’ – the disciples, on-other-hand, must deal with the transition from Jesus being physically by their side to his being with them spiritually. They are provided some instruction in John 16, verses 1 to 4, as Pastor Johannes explains in his sermon from Sunday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gOG832cIvY

Dear Church family and friends,

With Friday’s Bank Holiday sunshine lasting the whole weekend, we have had the perfect opportunity to enjoy all that spring has to offer. Some trees still have blossom on them, the fields are green and the sky has been blue – glorious! If you are of the opinion that spring is your favourite season, then you are in good company as Pastor Lucas thinks so too. Psalm 104 is a fitting response for the awe we must feel for God’s creation and how He had planned it all along: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk3DCS9jfTc

Dear Church family and friends,

We are not promised an easy life. In fact, we are told in John 15 : 18 – 27, what we are promised is experiences similar to those of Jesus – especially in terms of how we as believers are treated in society. In a world where hate seems to be easier to express than love, here we are as God’s children trying to live a life which is reflects the love He has for us. Pastor Johannes further explores this in his sermon from Sunday, and reminds of what to do when the world seems utterly determined in isolating us because of our faith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmusBtRytBA.

The tech guys had a hard time of it on Sunday when the Zoom livestream failed to broadcast. We would like to apologise again to those who were patiently waiting for the action to start. As you can see, a solution to recording the sermon was found, but it is audio only.

Dear Church family and friends,
Even as adults we can sometimes find friendships difficult to navigate. Life happens, people change and as a result the friendship might be different to what once was. What then, might friendship with Jesus look like? Pastor Lucas had some thoughts on this based on John 15 : 12 – 17 on Sunday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkZbMCBZ0Hk

Men’s Breakfast has a different format this month: one of the men and his family will be moving this Saturday. The rest of the men have therefore decided it would be better to help them – so there will be no breakfast. Instead, once all is finished there will be a BBQ at the family’s new place. If you are available from 10am on Saturday, please write to the e-mail address given below and we’ll give you more details.
