Religious rule-keeping often masquerades as faith. Jesus calls those in his Kingdom to something better. God’s character is to be embedded in us so thoroughly that the reflection and flavour of our generous God radiate from us.

In the Epistle to the Ephesians, Paul delivers a striking warning to believers who may be living in the light but not fully awake to it. This message, explores the unsettling possibility that a person can belong to Christ and still drift through life spiritually numb, distracted, and unaware of what God is calling them into. Paul calls the church to wake up, to step out of hidden darkness, to walk wisely in a distracted world, and to recognize how easily time, purpose, and passion can slip away unnoticed.

Loving God and loving others is central to Christian faith. This week we consider two beatitudes that address the longing of our heart in these two relationships. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:7-8 NLT)

The key to a good life is not getting what you want, but recalibrating your longings. Those who fix their deepest desires on what matters most enjoy the good life. Today, we complete the first triad of beatitudes that emphasizes a life of less (the meek), and we begin the triad that points to the role of longing as it describes a good life. How's your appetite?

This week we focus on the first three beatitudes (blessed statements) that describe the Good Life as a Life of Less: blessed are the poor, those who mourn, and the meek. We will also celebrate Communion, and an opportunity will be given following communion for any who would like the elders to anoint and pray for their healing.

Jesus confronts a group of people who appeared spiritually right on the outside but were far from God on the inside. They were committed to religious traditions and outward practices yet had lost sight of true obedience and a genuine relationship with God. Jesus shifts the focus from external rituals to the condition of the heart, teaching that real purity is not about what we do outwardly but about what comes from within.
How ritualistic are we?

The material in each of the gospels is arranged differently. Early in Matthew is an extended section of Jesus' teaching we call The Sermon on the Mount. Could it be that there is a very personal reason that Matthew gives this section such prominence?

This Sunday we will introduce a series called Kingdom Culture by reflecting on the dramatic change in Matthew’s life and how that may have prompted the priority he gave to this section of his gospel account. We will also review Psalm 1, which contains the seeds of many of the Sermon on the Mount themes.

Witnesses see events from different perspectives; when combined, these unique perspectives give us a more robust understanding of what happened. Today we explore the unique ending of each of the gospels. Together they give us confidence in the truth of the resurrection and expand our understanding of the ongoing significance of our faith in a risen Saviour.

The account of the triumphal entry in Luke prompts us to join in celebrating Jesus the King and to reflect on a sobering reality. Interestingly, the same scope of emotions surface in the progression of Psalms 22-24. So this Sunday we will explore the invitation and questions that surface in both the triumphal entry and in Psalm 24. On Good Friday we will explore the crucifixion through the lens of Psalm 22.

God is in the business of construction. He first tears down the walls that divide us, then builds a bridge that reconnects humanity with Himself through Christ. Finally, He gathers us together and builds us into one living house where His Spirit dwells.
