What if we’ve misunderstood work from the very beginning?

In Genesis 2, we discover something surprising. Before sin entered the world, before work became difficult and frustrating, God gave Adam a job. God planted a garden, placed Adam in it, and invited him to care for what God had created.

In other words, work was never meant to be a punishment. It was part of the life God designed us to enjoy.

Have you ever wondered what gives your life significance? We live in a world that often measures our worth by what we accomplish, how successful we become, or what we contribute. But Genesis tells us something remarkable. We don’t have to earn our worth. God has already given it to us.

When God created humanity in his image, he wasn’t simply telling us that we matter. He was revealing why we’re here. In the ancient world, kings placed images of themselves throughout their kingdoms to represent their authority. But God did something extraordinary. Rather than placing statues throughout his creation, he filled it with people made in his image. People like you and me.

And that changes everything. Every person we encounter bears God’s image, regardless of their age, abilities, accomplishments, or circumstances. Their dignity comes from the God who created them, not from what they can offer us. And if that’s true, it should change how we see ourselves and how we treat one another.

But being made in God’s image is about more than our identity. It’s also about our purpose. We were created to make God’s character visible in the world around us. We are meant to reflect His kindness, generosity, compassion, justice, and love through the way we live.

And here’s the beautiful part. We don’t need an extraordinary calling to live out that purpose. It happens in ordinary places. In our homes, workplaces, neighbourhoods, and relationships. Every conversation, decision, and opportunity to care for someone becomes a chance to represent the God who made us.

Of course, none of us does this perfectly. That’s why we need Jesus, the perfect image of God. Through his death and resurrection, he offers forgiveness and reconciliation with God, and through his Spirit, he restores us to the life we were created to live.

So, as you go into this week, carry one simple question with you:
What would Jesus look like here?

Wherever God has placed you, ask God to help you make his character visible in one ordinary moment.

Because you don’t have to become somebody important to represent God. You already bear God’s image.

Last week we started a new series! Made : Recovering the Life You Were Designed For. Episode 1- In The Beginning (Listen to the full sermon- link in bio)

We spend much of our lives trying to answer the question, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” We search for purpose in our work, our accomplishments, our relationships, and even in what we do for God. But Genesis takes us further back.

Before it tells us what humanity is called to do, it shows us what humanity was created to receive.

God forms the world and fills it with life. He prepares a place where humanity can flourish, and only then do we enter the story. Before we accomplish anything, we are blessed. Before we prove ourselves, God gives us a place. Before we do anything for God, we are invited to be with God.

This is where Genesis 1–2 reaches its relational climax. Creation does not culminate in a finished world, but in God dwelling with the people He has made. Humanity’s first full day is the seventh day, the day God rests and settles into His creation. Creation’s destination is communion: God with humanity and humanity with God. Our first experience of being human is not achievement, productivity, or proving our worth. It is presence.

Sin fractures that communion. Humanity reaches for life apart from the One who gave it, and the people created for God’s presence begin hiding from Him. Yet God does not abandon His creation. The story of Scripture is the story of God continually moving toward us until, in Jesus, the Creator Himself steps into the world He made. God comes into our brokenness to bring us home to the life we were created for.

Maybe purpose begins there. Not with asking, “What am I supposed to accomplish for God?” but with asking, “Am I learning to live my life with God?”
Because the deepest purpose of your life is not something you have to discover, achieve, or earn. Before you ever did anything for God, you were made for life with God.

A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Chris spoke about emotions and reminded us that they are something God intentionally created within us. God gave us the ability to feel joy, excitement, grief and sadness, anger, peace, and compassion.

These emotions are not random or meaningless. They are part of how God created us in His image and part of the beautiful, sometimes complicated experience of being human.

Having emotions doesn’t make us Weak, Faithless, or less Spiritual, It makes us as God Intended…

We need to remember that emotions are Indicators not Leaders.

Luke 15:11-32

Over the summer, we have explored practices like silence, Sabbath, prayer, Scripture, fasting, generosity, hospitality, serving, and community. But there is a danger. We can turn these practices into another spiritual to-do list, another way of proving we are faithful enough.

That was never the point.

In Luke 15, Jesus tells the story of two sons. The younger son runs away, loses everything, and returns home believing he is no longer worthy to be a son. But before he can earn anything back, his father runs to meet him, restores him, and throws a celebration. The older brother never left home. He worked hard and did everything right, yet he was angry when his father celebrated his brother’s return.

One son tried to find life by running away. The other tried to earn life by performing. Both had forgotten what it meant to be sons.

We can do the same thing with God. Prayer, Scripture, fasting, serving, and generosity can become ways of keeping score rather than ways of enjoying life with Him. But the Father invites us to something better.

We do not have to earn our place at His table. Jesus has already opened the way home. So keep praying. Keep opening Scripture. Keep serving. Keep practicing Sabbath. But do these things as a child enjoying the Father, not as a servant trying to earn a wage. And celebrate. Notice God’s goodness. Give thanks. Rejoice when grace shows up in someone else’s life.

The practices were never the destination. Life with God was.

The table is set. The door is open. Come to the feast. Grace gets the last word.
