Known, yet loved

There is a line I use to welcome visitors at Holy Trinity Clearview:
"Around here, we will love you even though we know you, and we hope you will do the same for us."
People usually do a double-take when they hear it. Some laugh nervously. Others look genuinely confounded.
Why? Because this exposes the deepest, darkest anxiety of the modern human heart:
the terrifying fear that if people really knew the mess inside us, they would leave.

We live in an age of intense self-curation.
On TikTok and Instagram, younger generations are drowning in a sea of superficial connection.
They present a perfect, edited, filtered version of themselves to the world, desperately chasing validation.
But deep down, this creates a profound loneliness. If people only love the filter, then you haven't actually been loved at all.
You have just been praised for a performance.
The internet demands that you are perfect, or you get cancelled. It demands that you know everything, or you get mocked. This an exhausting way to live.

The Church offers a radically different reality.
St. Macarius the Great wrote that the human heart is a deep, chaotic gulf, but it is also a throne room where God desires to dwell.
The early Church never expected people to walk through the doors fully healed and flawless.
They viewed the Church as a hospital for the sick, not a courtroom for the perfect.
True spiritual healing cannot happen in the dark, but does require us to be fully seen.
When Christ encounters the Samaritan woman at the well, she runs back to her village and says, "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did!"
She wasn't ashamed that her secrets were out. She was ecstatic.
For the first time in her life, she was entirely known, and yet entirely loved.

That is the scandalous invitation of the Church.
God already knows every hidden fault, every broken promise, and every secret anxiety you carry—and His response is the Cross.

If you are tired of performing, tired of doomscrolling, and tired of pretending you have it all together, know this: there is a place where you don't have to hide.
Step away from the screen. Come and see and experience the terrifying, beautiful freedom of being known, yet loved.
