Musings from the Pastor’s desk: Thoughts that may well make it into the sermon next
Sunday.
This Sunday we come to what should be one of the simplest lines in the Lord’s Prayer:
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Simple words…but perhaps one of the hardest prayers to mean, because many of us are
quite sure that I need to provide for me. We live in a world that teaches us to rely on
ourselves, to plan for the future, to insulate ourselves against every eventuality....its a religion
for some! But Jesus teaches us daily trust. Daily dependence. Daily grace.
To receive life (and bread) as gift from God I have to come with open hands rather than my
achievements. I am beginning to think that the “Us” in this petition is part of the key and helps
us unlock how to live this prayer. And so it is wonderful that this Sunday we have communion
at Tyrrell because communion reminds us that we come to God hungry, not self-sufficient.

From the Pastor’s desk:

“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”
It struck me this week that for many of us, those words sound heavy and restrictive. We resign
ourselves to God’s will because we “should”.
And yet Christians have sung about surrender with surprising joy:
“My chains fell off, my heart was free…”
“Love divine, all loves excelling…”
“Praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice…”
Why?
This Sunday we explore a startling possibility:
What if God’s will is not the enemy of human flourishing…
but the source of it?
