Filipino Community Church - Ottawa

Filipino Community Church - Ottawa lovers of Jesus...
friends of the Christ-less...
sharers of the Good news. You will feel at home with us.

We are a growing family of about 90 people from little babies to grandparents. If you speak any of the following languages -- Tagalog, Ilocano, Visayan and Ilonggo -- you will fit right in. Many of us work in the government, at homes as caregivers and in the business and industrial sector. Join us and be refreshed when we meet as cell groups in the homes during the week or when we worship on Sunda

y. Throughout the year we have great celebrations honoring our fathers, mothers, couples and our children. Every August is camp time and we all live in our tents for two to three days. Other great fun events are the anniversary in September… the Thanksgiving Day in October and the Christmas in December. Doctrinally, we are evangelicals -- Christ-centered, Bible-based, Spirit-filled, Mission-oriented and under the Christian & Missionary Alliance of Canada. Traditionally, the FCC family welcomes everyone, who just recently arrived from other country, with a small token The Mabuhay Box that will help the family start their new life in this city with the spirit of Love.

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. 30 For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light.”

What does it mean when people say, "I'm tired"? Probably they mean physical exhaustion. But tiredness could also mean being in a state of restlessness and despair perhaps because they are emotional and spiritually tired. People who are tired lack the energy and enthusiasm to perform certain tasks. Therefore, they need to rest and be refreshed.

In this week's Gospel, Jesus invites people to come to him to find rest. Who are these people that needed rest? Why do they need to rest? Then Jesus tells them, "Take my yoke and put it on you..." This is not a picture of rest but of labor. What's going on here?

Apparently, Jesus is not promising an absolute stopage from work or productivity. Rather, he is telling people that if we follow him and learn from him, everything will feel lighter, easier, and more enjoyable because we are working for someone who is humble, and gentle, and someone who genuinely cares for his people.

Join us this Sunday and let us continue to ponder on these words.

Lord Jesus, I am restless and tired.
I am overwhelmed by anxiety and fear.
My shoulders are heavy with loads of care.
Would you help me carry them?
Lord Jesus, I long for your yoke that is easy and light.
Help me experience your humility and gentleness.
Teach me to surrender to you all my burdens in life.
Grant me the faith to trust your promises to give me respite.
