IRES was proud to take part in the Multiculturalism and Islamic Heritage Month celebration at the Edmonton Parole Office and Grierson Institution!

From henna art and Ebru water marbling to vibrant cultural displays and traditional foods, the Moroccan and Kyrgyz communities — alongside many others — brought the richness of our diversity to life. 🎨🍽️

This is what community looks like: compassion, dignity, and belonging, built one connection at a time. 🤝

A proud moment for IRES! On October 27, Alberta's Minister of Education and Childcare, Demetrios Nicolaides, recognized IRES during a community gathering at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton.

The Minister offered special thanks for our work supporting people leaving prison and helping them reintegrate into the community — recognizing the dedication of our volunteers and the real impact of this work. 🙏

This recognition belongs to every volunteer and partner who helps individuals rebuild their lives with dignity. 💙

Building Bridges. Strengthening Community.

IRES was honoured to attend the Calgary Foundation’s Vital City 2026 at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park.

The event brought together Calgary’s charitable and community leaders to reflect on philanthropy, collaboration, trust, and community-led solutions for a stronger city.

At IRES, we remain committed to crime prevention, youth outreach, and post-release reintegration—restoring broken bonds and helping individuals rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Together, we can build a more connected, inclusive, and compassionate Calgary.

Join us in celebrating Islamic History Month through food, art, and cultural exchange! IRES (Islamic Restoration Society) is pleased to be a community partner for the Multicultural Lunch presented by the CSC Prairie Region Ethnocultural Advisory Committee (REAC).

The event will feature multicultural food, henna, Ebru art, calligraphy, cultural displays, and information tables. It will be an opportunity to connect, learn from one another, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our communities.

IRES was proud to attend Calgary John Howard Society's "Safer Communities Start Here" celebration!

The evening brought together Calgary's Mayor, Alberta Government officials, Correctional Service Canada representatives, and community leaders — all united around one goal: safer, stronger communities through rehabilitation and opportunity.

Keynote speaker Emily O'Brien shared her powerful journey from incarceration to entrepreneurship, proving that second chances and meaningful support can truly change lives. 💪

Safer communities aren't built through accountability alone — they're built through opportunity, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

Restoring hearts, rebuilding hope.

As part of my work with IRES supporting people in custody and their return to community life, I met with our volunteers at Al-Salam Centre in Calgary around the Dhuhr, Asr, and Maghrib prayers.

We discussed how mosques, Islamic centres, and Muslim communities can help people find support before becoming involved in crime, and welcome those rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Listening with compassion, strengthening connections, and nurturing a sense of belonging are central to this work.

We explored opportunities such as classes in Islamic values, Arabic and Qur’an understanding, practical skills workshops, and English language courses to support personal growth and community participation.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have said:

التَّائِبُ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ كَمَنْ لَا ذَنْبَ لَهُ

“The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.”
— Sunan Ibn Majah, 4250

This message reminds us of the hope for a new beginning. Alongside sincere repentance, taking responsibility, and making amends, a supportive community can help people move forward with dignity and purpose.

Inspiring youth. Building safer communities.

On October 1, I attended the Calgary Police Service Community Townhall at YMCA Seton, representing the Islamic Restoration Society (IRES) as Community Connections Liaison.

During the Q&A, I asked about developing and expanding programs that bring police officers together with positive role models and community heroes to inspire young people and help prevent crime.

Thank you to the Calgary Police Service team for responding to my question and creating space for community dialogue.

I believe that meaningful connections, mentorship and a sense of belonging can help young people build a positive future.

From Coming Together to Doing Good Together 🤝

Islamic Restoration Society (IRES) took part in the Pathways gathering in Edmonton, joining Christian and Muslim faith leaders, community members, and committee representatives from Calgary and Edmonton. Together, we reflected on past efforts and explored new opportunities to serve our communities.

IRES Executive Director Malikmurad Muradov contributed to the second session, while our Community Connections Liaison, Mehmet Buyukgezirci, presented the third session, “From Coming Together to Doing Good Together.” Our conversations focused on turning dialogue into shared action and strengthening bridges of trust in the face of prejudice and division.

At IRES, we believe that compassion, spiritual care, and meaningful community connections can help prevent harm and support people seeking a fresh start. Through our “From Isolation to Inclusion” project, we support individuals transitioning from custody as they rebuild relationships, embrace accountability, and find a renewed sense of belonging.

We remain committed to working alongside people of different faiths to uphold human dignity, nurture hope, and put our shared values into practice. Thank you to everyone who made this gathering possible. Our work continues—building connections and doing good together.

Coming together to read, reflect and grow. 🌲📖

On October 2–4, the IRES Committee brought young people together at Pine Lake for a reading and community retreat centred on faith, friendship and belonging.

Through shared reading, sohbet circles, prayer and time in nature, we encouraged Islamic and humanitarian values—compassion, integrity, responsibility and service to others.

We especially welcomed young newcomers to Canada and students beginning university, helping them build supportive friendships and feel connected to their community. Our aim is to help young people make positive choices and stay away from crime and harmful influences.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this gathering meaningful. Together, we can nurture a generation that contributes positively to society.
