This past week the Anglican Church of Canada, Presbyterian Church in Canada, and United Church of Canada collectively gifted the NCTR 1.5 million dollars in support of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. With this gift, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is another step closer to making Survivors’ vision of an international centre of remembrance, education, and healing, a reality. This is one way for churches to build relationships for reconciliation on this National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Tomorrow is National Indigenous Peoples Day and while it is imperative for churches to continue to build relationships with Indigenous Peoples toward reconciliation. Churches must also work with the government to change practices like this that raised systemic barriers to justice and to equity. Churches have that mission because we are called to love one another as Jesus loves us.

With National Indigenous Peoples Day this Sunday, some have asked me why bother. Well.... Living the gospel of love means listening to the truth of past wrongs and working actively to mend those broken relationships.

This Sunday is National Indigenous Peoples Day, which is the 30th anniversary of this day of observance, aligning with the summer solstice. At the beginning of worship each Sunday, we acknowledge the pivotal need for reconciliation that faces the truth of how colonization affected Indigenous Peoples as well as those who colonized or benefitted from colonialism. We also treasure the Indigenous spiritual wisdom colonizers long ignored and resolve to learn from that wisdom woven together with our Christian faith.
