A prayer for Labour Day. If you have the day off, enjoy your day! 👷🏼🧑🏼‍💼🧑🏼‍🏭

Loving God,
On this Labour Day, we give thanks for all who work to provide the things we need to live, and for the many ways that our labour contributes to the life of our communities and our world.

We give thanks for the witness of organized labour and unions, who remind us of the power of solidarity and our shared responsibility to safeguard fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity for every worker.

Bless workers with strength, safety and dignity. Bless employers and leaders with wisdom, fairness, and care. May all who have power use it to create workplaces and communities where everyone can flourish.

May our shared labour, and our commitment to justice, help bring about your vision of peace, dignity, and abundant life for all.

And remind us, O God, that in you, our labour is not in vain.

Please enjoy today's worship service. Our theme was Holy Ground -- "Remove your shoes and open your heart." Our Scripture reading told the story of Moses and the burning bush.

Rev. Read's sermon was entitled "Take Off Your Shoes." He spoke of how sometimes God wants you to notice something isn't right, to get your attention to take positive action. From the ancient example of Moses, we also considered the philanthropy of the recently deceased singer Dolly Parton. Among her many generous contributions to society, she launched an extremely popular book programme for children, in part because her father did not know how to read.

We also heard about Children Aid Ministry (LibCAM), a non-profit organization that helps children in Liberia afford to go to school. Anjou United has supported this organization for several years, and it is encouraging to hear that our donations do make a difference.

Our next service will be on Sunday September 27. It will be Orange Shirt Sunday, when we remember the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools, including those who never came home. We will also get to enjoy a baptism, and welcome Maverick Ransome on his first step in his Christian walk. Join us at 11 AM, in person or online.

Sunday is coming. And it's our favorite Sunday, when we open our doors for in-person worship!

This week, we will think about footwear (and when not to wear any). Most of us own a few different pairs of shoes, plus winter boots and summer sandals. Running shoes are suited for playing sports -- some sports even have specialized shoes. Jobs involving heavy equipment may require steel-toed boots. All of these examples provide comfort and safety to the feet.

When we get home, it feels liberating to kick off your shoes and pad around in stocking feet or bare feet. Comfort and simplicity are paramount. You dig your toes into the s**g carpet, or slide across the polished floor à la Tom Cruise-Risky Business. You leave the outside world -- not just the dirt and grime, but the cares and woes -- at the door for another time.

Our Scripture reading continues the story of Moses, which we started last week at Trinity. Moses has an encounter with God, while out tending a flock of sheep. During this encounter, God tells him to remove his sandals, for he is standing on holy ground.

Rev. Read will lead this service. His sermon is entitled “Take Off Your Shoes”.

Our summer corn roast and potluck this past weekend was a delicious treat. We started off outdoors, but got swarmed with flies so everything got carted inside. No sooner did the last chair come in, the heavens opened and it poured! Perhaps the flies were telling us something.....

Thank you to everyone who came to share our table, for all the amazing food, for helping us christen our brand-new BBQ! 🌽 Let's do this again real soon!

👋 How to build community this summer
#18. Have potlucks.

Potlucks can be magic. When everyone gets the opportunity to bring to a shared table something they love--their favourite potato chips, that special recipe their aunt passed down to them, the dessert that tastes like home, especially when home is far away--the buffet table becomes more than the sum of its parts.

This Saturday, we’ll be cooking up some tasty corn on the cob, and enjoying a potluck meal to go with it. Weather permitting, we’ll eat out in the yard. Mark your calendar and come experience how a potlock builds community!

Please RSVP with our social event planner Michelle at 514-560-7278 and let her know what you will be bringing. The deadline to RSVP is Thursday August 6, 6 PM.

Please enjoy today's worship service. The Scripture follows on from last week's service at our sister church Trinity United Church Montreal. Jacob is running from his old life and finds work with his future father-in-law. He is smitten with Rachel, and works 7 years for her father in order to win her hand in marriage. But on their wedding night, the father pulls a switcheroo and Jacob marries her older sister Leah. He has to work another 7 years before he can marry Rachel. Along the way, he fathers 13 children with both his wives as well as both of their handmaids. It's a mess worthy of any soap opera! But God is there in the mess, to help everyone sort their lives out. And God can help sort out messes in modern life too.

We also had the pleasure to celebrate Holy Communion. 🫓🍷

Our next in-person service will be on Sunday August 30. Join us at 11 AM -- in person, on Zoom, or by YouTube Live. In the meantime, Trinity will offer Sunday services and a Taizé evening prayer service.
