๐ "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." โ ๐๐ฑ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ 3:5 (NIV)
Some of the greatest moments in your life will not begin with applause. They will begin with surrender. Before God changes your circumstances, He will often ask you to change your posture. Moses came looking for a sheep, but he found the presence of God. What seemed like an ordinary day became the day that changed history forever.
Moses had spent forty years in the wilderness believing his greatest days were behind him. He was no longer living in Pharaoh's palace. He was no longer known as a prince. He was simply a shepherd. Yet heaven saw what the world could not. God was preparing a deliverer while Moses thought he had become a failure. Never mistake God's silence for God's absence. The seasons that feel hidden are often the seasons where God is shaping your purpose.
Then Moses saw something impossibleโa bush that burned but was not consumed. It was not the fire that made the moment holy; it was the presence of God in the fire. God's presence changes everything it touches. What should have been destroyed remained standing because God was in it. That is what His presence does. It sustains what the world says should collapse.
Before God spoke about Israel, before He revealed His plan, before He commissioned Moses, He gave one command: "Take off your sandals." Sandals represented the dust of the wildernessโthe dirt of yesterday's journey. God was saying, "You cannot carry yesterday into the place where I am calling you today." Every new season with God requires leaving something behind.
Many of us pray for open doors while refusing to release old fears, old pride, old wounds, and old identities. We ask God for miracles, but we cling to the very things that keep us from walking into them. The closer you come to God, the lighter you must travel. His presence demands surrender before it releases purpose.
The Lord then declared, "I have indeed seen the misery of My people... I have heard them crying out... and I am concerned about their suffering." (๐๐๐๐๐๐ 3:7, NIV). What comfort there is in those words. God is never blind to your pain. He sees every tear, hears every prayer, and knows every burden you carry. Even when heaven feels silent, God is already moving with compassion and purpose.
Moses believed his past disqualified him. He remembered the failure, the murder, the shame, and the years of hiding.
The same truth echoes through Scripture: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" โ๐๐๐๐๐๐ 43:18โ19 (NIV). God is never trapped by your yesterday. He specializes in bringing new life where people only expect regret.
The burning bush reminds us that God's fire is unlike any other fire. The fires of this world consume, destroy, and leave ashes behind. But the fire of God's presence purifies, strengthens, and transforms without destroying the person He loves. When God works in your life, He removes what is false so that what is eternal can shine.
Moses' calling did not begin with confidence; it began with obedience. He did not have all the answers. He did not feel qualified. He simply chose to draw near when everyone else would have walked away. Your destiny is often found in the moments when you decide to move toward God instead of away from Him.
The Lord would later assure Moses, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." โ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ 33:14 (NIV). That promise still stands today. The greatest blessing is not merely that God opens doors for us; it is that He walks with us through every door He opens. His presence is the strength that sustains every assignment He gives.
Perhaps today God is asking you to remove your own sandals. Not the shoes on your feet, but the attitudes, habits, fears, bitterness, pride, and distractions that keep you from recognizing holy ground. Sometimes the miracle you've been praying for begins with the surrender you've been avoiding
