What happens the moment a believer closes their eyes for the last time? Renowned theologian John Piper is addressing the controversial concept of "soul sleep," firmly rejecting the idea that the soul remains unconscious until the final resurrection.

Drawing from Scripture, Piper emphasizes that for the Christian, there is no "gap" in consciousness. "To be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord," he explains, citing the apostle Paul's confidence. Piper argues that the transition is immediate, describing death not as a long slumber, but as an instant entrance into a "conscious, personal, and joyful fellowship with Jesus."

Piper clarifies that while the body awaits resurrection, the soul is already experiencing the presence of God. "It is better by far," he notes, echoing the biblical promise that death for a believer is not a loss of life, but the beginning of a far greater one.
