Moses saw a glimpse of God.

Jesus reveals the fullness.

John 1:18 says, “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

When Moses asked God to show him His glory, he was hidden in the cleft of the rock and only permitted to see a glimpse.

That moment points to the limitation of the Old Covenant.

Moses, the law and the Old Testament could reveal something true about God, but they could not reveal the complete picture.

They gave glimpses. Shadows. Partial revelation.

Jesus gives us the fullness.

He has declared the Father to us.

And just as Moses could lead Israel to the border of the Promised Land but could not take them into it, the Old Testament ultimately leads us to Jesus.

Its role is to bring us to Christ.

Then Christ takes us into His promised life.

Moses saw a glimpse of God.

Jesus reveals the fullness.

John 1:18 says, “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

Moses asked God to show him His glory, but he could only see a glimpse.

That is also the limitation of the law and the Old Covenant.

They could reveal part of the truth. They could give us shadows and glimpses.

But they could never give us the complete picture of who God is.

Jesus does.

He has declared the Father to us.

And just as Moses could lead Israel to the border of the Promised Land but could not take them into it, the Old Testament ultimately leads us to Jesus.

It brings us to Christ so that Christ can take us into His promised life.

What if grace is much bigger than simply “unmerited favour”?

John 1:17 says, “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

In the previous verse, John spoke about receiving from Christ’s fullness.

That fullness is what grace gives us.

Everything God is and everything He has freely given to us is found in Christ.

But how do we recognise and receive what has been given?

Through truth.

Jesus reveals the truth about who God is, what He is like, and what He has made available to us.

The law could expose the problem and point toward what was coming, but it was only a shadow.

The substance is Christ Himself.

Grace is the gift. Truth is the revelation and the doorway through which we access that gift.

And Jesus stands at the centre of it all.

Grace is far more than unmerited favour.

John 1:17 says, “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

Grace is everything God has freely given us in Christ. His fullness made available to us.

And truth reveals what that gift actually is.

Jesus doesn’t simply tell us the truth about God. He is the revelation of God, and through Him we discover what has been freely given to us.

The law could expose the problem, but it couldn’t produce the solution.

It could point toward what was coming, but the substance is Christ Himself.

Grace is the gift.

Truth is the revelation and the doorway through which we access that gift.

And Jesus is the Door, the doorkeeper, and the treasure waiting on the other side.

The law could expose sin, but it couldn't change us or set us free from indwelling sin. Even perfect law-keeping could never fix the heart of the sin issue.

God promised a new heart, a new spirit and His Spirit within us. Jesus came, and Romans 6 and 8 unpack what Christ has done in us as we've been baptised in Christ. We've been set free from the law of sin and death and from indwelling sin.

The New Covenant is an inside job. Jesus deals with the heart from which our actions flow.

John 1:17; Ezekiel 36:26-27; Romans 6-8.

Sin isn't merely a choice. It's a condition. Cleaning the outside of the cup doesn't make the inside clean.

Moses was the mediator of the Old Covenant, and Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant. God gave Israel the law to reveal the severity of sin and their great need for a Saviour. Even perfect obedience to every law, statute and ordinance could never fix the heart of the sin issue.

The law exposes sin, but it has no ability to change us or set us free from indwelling sin. God promised through Ezekiel to give us a new heart, a new spirit and to put His Spirit within us.

Jesus came. Romans 6 and 8 unpack what Christ has done in us as we've been baptised in Christ: we've been set free from the law of sin and death and from indwelling sin.

The New Covenant is an inside job. Jesus deals with the heart from which our actions flow. God promises to change us from the inside out.

John 1:17; Ezekiel 36:26-27; Romans 6-8.
