Over five weeks at Hinterland Chapel, we’ve been exploring what it means to follow Jesus. From the curiosity of those first disciples, through the challenges of becoming like him, to the cost of following and the grace of beginning again when we lose our way.

It’s a journey of becoming. And an invitation that still speaks to us today.

In the final week of our ‘Come, Follow Me’ series we returned to the shores of Galilee and the beautiful story of Peter's failure and restoration.

It's a story that reminds us that even when our faithfulness fails, Jesus remains faithful. And our failures don't have to be the end of our story. 💛

‘Come, Follow Me… Again’

Peter was certain he would never let Jesus down.

Then came the night when everything fell apart.

Have you ever discovered that you weren’t quite the person you thought you were? That despite your best intentions, you were capable of failing in ways you never imagined?

Peter knew that feeling. And he might have thought his story with Jesus was over.

But one morning, beside the Sea of Galilee, something remarkable happened.

This Sunday, we conclude our ‘Come, Follow Me’ series, back on the shoreline where it all began.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross and follow me.” — Mark 8:34

These are some of Jesus’ most confronting words.

In Week 4 of our “Come, Follow Me” series, we explore what Jesus meant by them, what the cross reveals about the shape of discipleship, and why the way of Jesus looks so different from the way the world understands power and victory.

What might these words of Jesus mean for us now? And what kind of life might be waiting on the other side of them?

We started by the shoreline of Galilee with Jesus’ invitation:

“Come, follow me.”

The disciples stepped onto the road without really knowing where it would lead.

They have walked with Jesus. Sat with him. Watched him. Learned from him. Been confused by him.

And last week, Peter finally found words for who it was they were following:

“You are the Messiah.”

But knowing who Jesus is raises another question:

What kind of Messiah is he?

This week, Jesus begins to answer that question by telling his disciples where following him leads.

The cross.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” — Mark 8:34

These are confronting words.

What did they mean to the people who first heard them?
What does it mean to deny yourself?
What kind of life has to die?
And why does Jesus place the cross right at the centre of discipleship?

This Sunday we’ll sit with these difficult words and explore both the confrontation and the grace within them.

COME, FOLLOW ME | Week 3: “Who Do You Say I Am?”

Peter gets the answer right: “You are the Messiah.”

And then, almost immediately, he tries to correct Jesus!

You can have all the right words about Jesus and still be wrong about Jesus.

It raises a challenging question for all of us:

Does the Jesus we confess have permission to contradict us?

Because any spirituality that never contradicts us cannot transform us.

But here’s the good news. Jesus doesn’t reject Peter when he gets it wrong. He corrects him, keeps him close, and continues the journey.

Correction isn’t rejection. Sometimes it’s the very thing that sets us free. 🙏

How does Simon become Peter?

Mark tells us that Jesus called the disciples “that they might be with him.”

They learned the way of Jesus by walking with him, watching him, listening to him, getting things wrong, and slowly letting his way become their way.

This message explores how we are shaped by what holds our attention, how discipleship reaches deeper than simply knowing the right answers, and why Jesus’ invitation is ultimately not just “follow me,” but “remain in me.”

This Sunday we continue our new series, “Come, Follow Me”.

Last week we stood beside the lake and heard Jesus say, “Follow me.”

But what happens next?

How does Simon become Peter? How do ordinary people actually become more like Jesus?

Mark tells us that Jesus called his disciples “that they might be with him.”

They walked with him, watched him, listened, got things wrong, and kept following. And slowly, his way began to become their way.

This Sunday we’ll explore what it means to be formed by Jesus in a world where so many other voices are constantly forming us.

Not simply learning more about Jesus.
Being with him.
Remaining in him.
Sharing his life.

What kind of man says, “Follow me”... and people do?

This week we began our new series, ‘Come, Follow Me’, with the story of Jesus calling a handful of ordinary fishermen from the shoreline.

They didn’t know where the road would lead. They didn’t fully understand who Jesus was. They certainly didn’t know who they themselves would become.
And still, they followed.

This message is about what it means to take the first step before you have everything worked out.

You don’t need to know where the road ends before you take the first step.
