A prayer from the National President of the Uniting Church in Australia, Rev Charissa Suli:

I invite the Uniting Church across Australia to pray for Helen Haines, the independent Federal Member for Indi, following a serious incident outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon.

We hold Helen, her family, friends, staff and the wider Indi community in our prayers at this distressing time. We pray for her healing and recovery, for wisdom and skill for those providing her medical care, and for comfort and strength for all who have been affected by this incident.

As people of faith, we affirm the dignity of every person and reject violence in all its forms. We give thanks for the members of the community who acted quickly to assist and support Helen in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

At this difficult time, may we resist speculation, hold one another with kindness, and continue to uphold compassion, respect and peace in our communities and public life.

May God’s healing presence surround Helen, may God’s peace be with her loved ones, and may God’s love sustain all those who are worried and concerned.

We join the Catholic community around the world in praying for Pope Leo XIV during his illness and recovery.

Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli offers a prayer for healing, strength and peace, and for all those caring for him. Together, we also hold in prayer everyone in our communities who is sick or hurting.

As part of the wider Christian Church, we share in one another’s joys and struggles, united in Christ through faith, hope and love.

It appears that Judith has had a few recent bookings that have caused her to depart from her normal calm and unflustered manner. We can only apologise for this notice, which she has stuck up all around the parish. No doubt she felt better for doing so.

A welcome outcome for refugees and people seeking safety.

The Uniting Church in Australia welcomes the federal government's decision to maintain Australia’s Refugee and Humanitarian Program at 20,000 places per year.

Rev Charissa Suli, President of the Uniting Church in Australia was among those who spoke out, adding the Church’s voice to the campaign and calling for Australia to remain a place of welcome and compassion for people seeking safety.

Led by the Refugee Council of Australia, the campaign bought together refugee communities, churches, community organisations and advocates across the country to oppose a proposed reduction in Australia’s humanitarian intake.

We give thanks to the Refugee Council of Australia for its leadership, and to everyone who raised their voice as part of this collective effort.

Together, our voices can make a difference.

The Uniting Church has a longstanding commitment to standing alongside refugees and people seeking asylum. We will continue to advocate for an Australia that responds to people seeking safety with compassion, dignity, justice and a generous welcome.
