PART THREE

The scriptures do not promise that following Jesus is going to be all smooth sailing.

They don’t promise that at all. In fact, they quite often say the opposite.

So what does it mean for us to have a Good Shepherd?

It means that even though life is difficult and having faith is challenging, the Good Shepherd says that He will be with us on that journey.

He is with us in the dark places. He is there to sustain, guide, lead, comfort and strengthen us. He shows us the path which is indeed leading to the fullness of life - the path that He wants to lead us on.

And so our peace lies not in a perfectly tranquil life with no worries at all.

It comes from finding our security in Him when all around us is danger, uncertainty and doubt.

Our peace comes from trusting in and knowing the care of the Good Shepherd while we walk through the dark valley.

PART TWO

When we hear about the peace, restoration of soul, and fullness of life that Jesus and Psalm 23 are talking about, it’s talking about Heaven.

When we come to dwell in our Father’s house in eternal life with Him, we will be perfectly at peace and we shall not want anything else.

Yes, then our cup will be flowing over. Our souls will be completely restored. We will not want to be anywhere else.

That will be the perfect fulfillment of this text. We should hope for that, claim that promise and cling to it.

But this text is also saying that we will be led and cared for by our Good Shepherd now as we walk through this life - in the midst of evil, suffering, danger, trials and tribulations.

PART ONE

Perhaps like me, when you think of Psalm 23, you imagine Jesus with a profoundly calm presence, a loving look in his eyes, and peace flowing from his face. He holds a little lamb so gently as He sits on green grass beside a tranquil stream.

A picture of contentment and peace. A beautiful image.

But it’s missing something.

What about the dark valley? What about the enemies that are supposedly surrounding the sheep as well?

I don’t know if you’ve ever pictured Psalm 23 and thought of the Shepherd wielding his staff to fight off a wolf, or gathering the flock as there are bandits circling around them trying to ambush them and steal some of the sheep.

It’s a different way of thinking about the Good Shepherd.

It’s a different image that evokes something new in us, doesn’t it?

But this is the context of Psalm 23 when we really look at it. It’s about danger and evil surrounding us on all sides.

When Jesus speaks of gathering the sheep into the sheepfold, it’s because they wouldn’t be safe unless they were inside.

When He speaks of the sheep that recognise His voice, listen to Him and follow Him, that’s because there are other voices that are trying to lead the sheep astray.

When He speaks of the sheep who are able to go freely in and out and are sure of finding good pasture, that’s because if it wasn’t for the care of the Shepherd, they wouldn’t be sure of finding good pasture. They would get lost. They would go hungry. They might, in their wanderings, run into this thief who comes to steal and kill and destroy.

So the first, peaceful image that we had is true - but it’s incomplete.

The promise is true. God isn’t lying to us. The scripture isn’t lying to us. But the way that these readings are promising this peace to us isn’t what we immediately imagine.

What is the simplest and shortest prayer you have ever prayed, or you have ever heard?

There was a four year old boy who said the same prayer every night before he went to bed.

“Love you Jesus. Thank you Jesus. Sorry Jesus.”

That’s all.

The shortest, simplest prayer from a pure heart.

He didn’t ask for anything. He just simply said, “Love you Jesus. Thank you Jesus. Sorry Jesus.”

Sometimes in relationships, you don’t need to speak much. By seeing the people you love and by knowing them, you understand what they want and what they don’t want. You know what they want to say, and what they don’t like.

That is what prayer life is like too. We don’t need to ask too much. We don’t need to do too much. In the simplest way, we know that our Father is loving us. God knows our heart.

Let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us to say this simple prayer.

“Love you Jesus. Thank you Jesus. Sorry Jesus.”

When life feels chaotic. When things are uncertain.

We know what to trust.

We look to Jesus.
