Had this one for a while, more of an appreciation post..
Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star, $72
Named after Pan-African pioneer Marcus Garvey's shipping company (Black Star Line). Also perhaps a premonition as after this album both rappers were flung into Black American stardom.
Although it wasn't the earliest "conscious" hip-hop, it was probably the most gritty and raw that had come out by 1998. Afro-centric themes and socio-politcal commentary whilst still being able to show off their excellent flow and lyrical prowess..
I love this album, the beats are so varied and dynamic, the lyrics are immaculate + they flow into hooks with a vocal chorus that just fits so effortlessly over the top.
Definitely worth a listen if you haven't been graced by the Black Star before..
Also check later slides for some flicks of the flyest lyric book i have ever seen!
