June 3: St. Charles Lwanga and Companions
Christianity was still quite new to Uganda, Africa, when a Catholic mission was started in 1879. The priests were members of the Missionaries of Africa. Because of their white religious habit, they became popularly known as the "White Fathers." King Mwanga did not know what Christianity was all about. But he became angry when a Catholic, Joseph Mkasa, cor

rected him for the way he was living. The king had murdered a group of Christians and their Anglican bishop. The king was also involved in homosexual activity. He was especially interested in his court pages. King Mwanga's anger turned into resentment and hatred for Joseph Mkasa and his religion. A few of the king's ambitious officers fueled his fears with lies. Joseph Mkasa was beheaded on November 18, 1885. The persecution had begun. Before it was over, a hundred people died. Twenty-two of them would be declared saints. With the death of Joseph Mkasa, Charles Lwanga became the chief religion teacher of the king's Catholic pages. On May 26, 1886, the king found out that some of his pages were Catholic. He called in Denis Sebuggwawo. He asked Denis if he had been teaching religion to another page. Denis said yes. The king grabbed his spear and flung it violently through the young man's throat. Then the king shouted that no one was permitted to leave his headquarters. War drums beat throughout the night. In a hidden room, Charles Lwanga secretly baptized four pages. One was St. Kizito, a cheerful, generous thirteen-year-old. He was the youngest of the group. Charles Lwanga had often protected Kizito from the king's lust. Most of the twenty-two Uganda martyrs who have been proclaimed saints were killed on June 3, 1886. They were forced to walk thirty-seven miles to the ex*****on site. After a few days in prison, they were thrown into a huge fire. Seventeen of the martyrs were royal pages. One of the martyred boys was St. Mbaga. His own father was the ex*****oner that day. Another of the martyrs, St. Andrew Kagwa, died on January 27, 1887. He was among the twenty-two proclaimed saints in 1964 by Pope Paul VI. Reflection: May we be "steadfast in faith and love" in the face of difficult situations in our lives. May our witness be able to bring many people to God.

28th Sunday in ordinary time
9 October 2022

Greetings from Kigali, the land of a thousand hills!

Sin, the modern day leprosy; faith, the everlasting remedy to our sinfulness; thankfulness, the response which always pleases the Lord the most.

This Sunday’s readings carry a trilogy of messages that are central to salvation.

In the first reading, Second Kings 5: 14-17, Naaman, the great general who was afflicted with leprosy finds prophet Elisha who tells him to dip himself seven times in the river Jordan. Naaman was cleansed and sought to thank Elisha with gifts, which Elisha turned down. Instead, Naaman went back home where he constructed a temple for the Lord, who he praised and thanked for the rest of his life.

In the Gospel reading: Luke 17: 11-19, while on his way to Jerusalem, some say at the exact spot Naaman met Elisha, 10 lepers ask Jesus to cleanse them. Jesus tells them to report back to their priests. Nine of the lepers hurriedly went away while one remained behind to thank Jesus first before going back to report to his priest.

We receive abundant blessings day after day. Yet we take all these for granted and usually only think of the Lord when we are in need again. The air we breathe, just waking up in the morning, enjoying the company of family and loved ones; we take all this for granted and only think of the Lord when the child or when we fall ill.

In between, we are lepers, always in sin. Yet God is always ready to absolve us of our sins when we ask Him to, every time, and in all circumstances. God, unlike us mere mortals, does not say, I will think about it when we ask for forgiveness. His forgiveness is instant. Yet when that happens, we forget to be thankful to Him, going away with pride and frequently falling back into sin again.

The trilogy of todays message is clear:
1. We are perpetual sinners (modern day lepers)
2. God cleanses us (heals us) instantly when we ask Him in faith.
3. We must remember to give thanks to the Lord when our sins are blotted out.

Yes, God is not pleased when we go astray. Yet He is always happy to receive us back when we repent. And He is even happier when we remember to give thanks for His forgiveness.

Have a brilliant week ahead.

The youngest conductor, ten year old McCarthy Bvunzawabaya, a grade 5 pupil from St. Patrick's Primary School became the second runner up with his St. Martin's Youth choir.

It was a tight contest, too tough on stage to the extent that three singers from two choir fell down due to black out, some after singing solo section. Ballot 5, Holly Spirit in Nkulumane had one singer falling. The clever conductor helped the singer out. The stage temperature kept rising, Ballot 13, Our Lady Queen of Peace from Entumbane saw two of their singers falling, one during performance, the second one, right at the end of the song.
