28th Sunday in ordinary time
9 October 2022
Greetings from Kigali, the land of a thousand hills!
Sin, the modern day leprosy; faith, the everlasting remedy to our sinfulness; thankfulness, the response which always pleases the Lord the most.
This Sunday’s readings carry a trilogy of messages that are central to salvation.
In the first reading, Second Kings 5: 14-17, Naaman, the great general who was afflicted with leprosy finds prophet Elisha who tells him to dip himself seven times in the river Jordan. Naaman was cleansed and sought to thank Elisha with gifts, which Elisha turned down. Instead, Naaman went back home where he constructed a temple for the Lord, who he praised and thanked for the rest of his life.
In the Gospel reading: Luke 17: 11-19, while on his way to Jerusalem, some say at the exact spot Naaman met Elisha, 10 lepers ask Jesus to cleanse them. Jesus tells them to report back to their priests. Nine of the lepers hurriedly went away while one remained behind to thank Jesus first before going back to report to his priest.
We receive abundant blessings day after day. Yet we take all these for granted and usually only think of the Lord when we are in need again. The air we breathe, just waking up in the morning, enjoying the company of family and loved ones; we take all this for granted and only think of the Lord when the child or when we fall ill.
In between, we are lepers, always in sin. Yet God is always ready to absolve us of our sins when we ask Him to, every time, and in all circumstances. God, unlike us mere mortals, does not say, I will think about it when we ask for forgiveness. His forgiveness is instant. Yet when that happens, we forget to be thankful to Him, going away with pride and frequently falling back into sin again.
The trilogy of todays message is clear:
1. We are perpetual sinners (modern day lepers)
2. God cleanses us (heals us) instantly when we ask Him in faith.
3. We must remember to give thanks to the Lord when our sins are blotted out.
Yes, God is not pleased when we go astray. Yet He is always happy to receive us back when we repent. And He is even happier when we remember to give thanks for His forgiveness.
Have a brilliant week ahead.
