*WHO IS JESUS OF NAZARETH TO YOU?*
*Matthew 16*
_13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am?_
_14 And they said, Some say that You are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets._
_15 He saith unto them, But whom say you that I am?_
_16 And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God._
_17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father which is in Heaven._
_18 And I say unto you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it._
*1. The Need To Follow Someone*
People follow religions, heroes, powerful people and groups in order to associate themselves with victory. Not only for that, but also in hope that, perhaps we too may bring the same victories into our own lives.
This is the reason why Jesus in this passage speaks about *His Church* . Do you know that there are many churches, and they do not all belong to Jesus?
What is a church. Simply, it is a grouping of people that congregate together, subject to it's leader, to carry out his purpose. The group takes their purpose from the leader, from which they often meet, to talk about things, and to plan about what to do for themselves and their environment.
Churches are councils who carry out their masters' purpose. The church of Jesus Christ has an agenda and work to do.
So, for the many groups and associations, people follow someone and they are looking forward to benefit and achieve something from this relationship.
*2. Our Need For a Saviour*
We follow heroes and big people because we all need help. We need that super person to solve our problems and help us to get ahead. No matter how much we may claim independence, or good personal abilities, we all need someone to give us a hand. We yearn for that Special Someone Who is programmed in our subconscious, to be sought. We yearn and we seek for Him.
And people behave like little babies who know that they need something, but keep on trying all kinds of things, crying and making noise.
Some try, food, wealth, fame, drugs, relationships with men or women, and in heroes of men and women, in groups, in societies...
This is because man is looking for The Helper, The Deliverer, The Great Giver, The Healer...that Special Person.
In Hebrew He is called Messiah, and from the Greek, He is the Christ.
*3. What Do People Say?*
Different people have different views about salvation itself, that is why there are so many religions. But most of religion is born out of rebellion, that is, the need to independently establish our own ways to find the Saviour, or to salvation.
What is salvation? It is being helped out of our mess, our fallen state, helplessness and from the injuries arising out of our own failures, and ultimately, salvation from death, because inside us is written a program that we must live...forever. Salvation leads us back to life.
We must however, admit that this life cannot be found outside of our Maker...God. But God established that Way through His Son Jesus Christ.
But what do people say about Jesus? Many reject and dismiss Him. And some who claim to believe in Him, water down His claims, His role and work of salvation, such that He just becomes one among many men, one among many religious figures, who really cannot help us. Some do not bother to really know Him themselves, and they depend on other people's views. They depend on the views of politicians, religious leaders, community leaders, elders or parents, friends and the media...and they try to be politically correct so that they don't offend anyone.
Who is Jesus to you?
*4. But What Do You, Personally Say?*
Before we join, Jesus' council, or group of people called the Church, we must come to a personal realisation, view and acceptance of Him. No one can be saved until they come to that revelation that Peter received:
Jesus of Nazareth, came out from God Himself and is that very Saviour of our lives we are all looking for. You may say it in a differently arranged way, but the meaning will always be that:
Jesus, You are the Christ/Messiah/Saviour, the Son of the true God who is alive and Who created the worlds and us. Jesus was sent to save us, to help our lives and bring us to eternal life.
So Jesus is not just a mere human church, nor a political party, or religious group, neither one of the mbingas, nor a sports team, nor a rich and powerful country, neither a race of people or their culture, nor a secret society, riches, nor wealth and riches nor social influence...He is above all these things in order to personally save us and admit us into His Kingdom, the Kingdom of God.
And it is only people who have accepted Jesus this way, who are part of His church. Jesus never rejected that there are, and there shall be many churches, but only one matters, that is His, and it is the only one where you find truly saved people, who are also carrying out His work. By the way, it is also not a denomination.
*Let us pray* : Thank You Father God for sending Your Son, Jesus of Nazareth to save us. Help us to remain in His Church, and to do all His will, defeating the kingdom of Satan in our lives, and in whomsoever and to wherever you send us. In Jesus' Name.
Amen.
