MISSIONARY CHILDHOOD GATHER FOR DIOCESAN CONGRESS.

Hundreds of Missionary childhood from the parishes in the Diocese of Mutare accompanied by their animators assembled at St Kilian’s Mission for their annual diocesan Congress from the 7th to the 9th of August. The Diocese of Mutare has a very strong Holy childhood program in all the parishes with dedicated animators guiding enthusiastic and energetic children. The congress was themed 'Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgive each other , just as in Christ God forgave you” All activities and talks cantered around this powerful message, inspiring the children to live out these virtues in their daily lives.
Throughout the Congress, the children engaged in various reflective and prayerful activities, including group prayers, poetry recitations, Bible quizzes, and lively singing. The event provided a unique platform for children to share ideas, make new friends, deepen their faith, and learn from each other's examples of kindness and responsibility.
Tinashe , one of the missionary children, expressed his enthusiasm: "I am encouraged to take responsibility when I see others standing in front of the group giving instructions reciting a poem or conducting the choir ." The highlights of the Congress included spirited choral competitions and Bible quiz. The children showcased their talents and knowledge, with St. Joseph Mutare winning the first prize for the best choir and Holy Trinity Cathedral securing the top spot in the quiz category.
The Congress culminated in a solemn Holy Mass celebrated by Rt. Rev. Bishop Paul Horan. In his homily, the Bishop assured the children of the Church’s love and value for them. He urged the children to channel their energies into helping others and emphasized their vital role in evangelization—sharing the Good News with peers and families.
Bishop Horan encouraged the children to prioritize their relationship with God, suggesting that they start and end each day with prayer—whether at home, at school, or on the road. He also expressed concern about the way children are using social media and smartphones. He urged them to use their devices responsibly, ensuring that technology serves their faith journey rather than distract from it. After the Holy mass the winning teams were given the trophies to take to their parishes .
Though the Congress came to an end , many children left motivated and their faith rekindled Tatenda , one of the participants, shared his reflection: "The Congress helped me understand more about being a Missionary Child and my responsibilities." The Congress inspired them to live out their Christian calling with kindness, responsibility, and purpose.

Caritas Charity Half Marathon Unites Community in Support of the Underprivileged.

The Caritas Charity Half Marathon brought together people from all walks of life in a united effort to support the less privileged through fundraising for the Diocese of Mutare’s soup kitchen programme.
Held on August 1, 2026, at St Dominic’s under the theme “Run to Support the Soup Kitchen,” the event attracted participants from different religious, social and professional backgrounds, highlighting the spirit of unity and compassion.
Speaking during the event, the Bishop of Mutare, His Lordship Paul Horan, said the half marathon was not only for Catholics but was open to everyone willing to support a worthy cause.
“This event is for everyone. Regardless of religion or background, we invite all people to join us in supporting the less privileged in our communities,” he said.
Participants competed in various categories, including the 21-kilometre race, 10-kilometre race, 5-kilometre race and the 2-kilometre fun walk.
While the event primarily served as a fundraising initiative, many participants also viewed it as an opportunity to improve their health and physical fitness.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Misheck Mugadza, commended the initiative, saying physical exercise contributes to a healthy mind and body.
“I am happy that events like this are taking place because a healthy mind and body come through regular exercise, and that enables us to live longer,” he said.
Participants praised Caritas Zimbabwe under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mutare for organising the event, describing it as an important initiative that promotes both community welfare and healthy living.
The charity half marathon has now been recognised on the national sporting calendar, with organisers expressing confidence that future editions will attract even greater participation and raise more support for the underprivileged.

Permanent Secretary Commends St Kilian's, Gatsi Primary for Excellence.

The two schools that received the 2025 Secretary’s Merit Award have demonstrated a strong commitment to effective school management in line with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s priorities, Permanent Secretary Moses Mhike said.
Addressing guests during the 2025 Secretary’s Merit Award ceremony at St Kilian’s High School on July 30, Mr Mhike commended St Kilian’s High School and Gatsi Primary School for equipping learners with skills that are critical to national development.
“It is a highly valued gesture of appreciation for outstanding performance, and for the institutions that receive the award, it is a source of pride to the Ministry,” Mr Mhike said.
“We remain guided by the National Development Strategy 2, which recognises education as a pillar of national development and human transformation,” he said.
The two Manicaland schools were recognised for their sustained investment, innovation and consistency in delivering quality education.
Highlighting the importance of education in communities, Mr Mhike commended parents and teachers for their commitment to supporting the schools over the years, saying the achievement was a testament to their hard work and dedication.
The 2025 Secretary’s Merit Award winners received several prizes, including the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at St Kilian’s High School by the Permanent Secretary.
The ceremony was graced by Permanent Secretary, Moses Mhike senior education officials,Rt Rev. Paul Horan the Bishop of Diocese of Mutare, and some Priests of the Diocese.

Bishop Congratulates Seminarians on Completing First Stage of Formation

Bishop Paul Horan has congratulated five seminarians who completed the first stage of their formation at St. Monica Minor Seminary on July 28, encouraging them to cultivate good habits as they continue their journey toward the priesthood.
Speaking during the graduation Mass, Bishop Horan urged the seminarians to remain rooted in Christ, saying a strong spiritual foundation is essential for their vocation.
Reaffirming his message in the homily, the bishop described the seminarians as “mustard seeds” that must continue to grow in faith and eventually help others grow closer to God.
“Things can go wrong if we keep ourselves from God. It’s easy to get into any habit, but it’s hard to come out of it. Every day you must find ways to develop good habits,” Bishop Horan said.
The five seminarians completed a year of formation that began in September and concluded in July under the guidance of Father Kapumha and Father Mangwiro.
In his closing remarks, Bishop Horan encouraged the brothers to remain steadfast in following Christ, assuring them that God would strengthen them as they continue preparing for the priesthood.
The seminarians will now proceed to the next stage of their formation in Mazowe as they continue discerning their vocation to become future priests.
