SUNDAY 8 MARCH 2026
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY- CHRIST, THE WATER OF LIFE

Not even the drizzling showers nor the chilly low temperatures could deter the family of St Don Bosco parish in Masvingo Diocese, led by the St Ambrose small Christian Community, from converging and celebrating 2 masses on the third Sunday of lent.

The first mass was led by the youth while St. Ambrose Community, formerly section 27, led the second mass.

In spiritually mulching sermons during the two seperate masses, both Very Reverend Father Oscar Chagweda and Father Stephen Gogoma took time to congratulate all women and appreciate their resilience, endurance and fortitude to navigate past life challenges which in many a case, are faced by women.

Coincidentally, today's gospel is centered on a woman whose engagement with Christ transformed in nature and dimension from ordinary to divine.

Father Chagweda explained how much a mystery it is that Christ the provider of everything gets tired and thirsty, and seeks a quench from the sinful samaritan woman when ordinary the vice versa appears normal. This, Father Chagweda said, goes to show how much Christ yearns to get his flock repent from sin and align.

Even the timing of the water fetching chore, mid day, was an impetus the divine appointment between Christ and the samaritan woman to ensue, given that sequence and practice is to fetch water either early in morning or later at close of day. It goes to show that at times we need to detach from public attention and have isolated personal time and encounter with the Lord for meaningful transformation and salvation to ensue.

The samaritan woman kept elevating her reference to Christ, from ordinary to prophet until she ends up realizing the Messiah in him. This, Father Chagweda added, should teach us to grow our faith in leaps and bounce by each encounter we have with Christ.

Just like the woman left behind her claypot and went uphill to the village to broadcast her transformational engagement with Christ, Fathers Chagweda and Gogoma said we too should leave behind various clay pots of our lives which inhibit us from fully realizing the presence of Christ. Modern day Clay pots of our lives that require elimination vary in form and type from hate, ungratefulness, failure to forgive among many other.

Once one transforms and evolve from evil to righteousness, society must make the sinner's past as the reference point nor defining factor. Instead, Fathers Chagweda and Gogoma said focus should be on the new transformed being. The late Pope Francis once said the church is a hospital for sinners.

Father Gogoma weighed in with a simple "to-do" list of what a faithful should do to taste Christ's water which when taken, perpetually eliminates all thirsty. These are involvement of Christ in all we do, as well as the word of God and the love of God.

SUNDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2026
1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

United in faith, the family of St Don Bosco parish in Masvingo Diocese set the season of lent in motion when they gathered and celebrated the first Sunday in lent.

Two masses were celebrated by Father Tauyanago and Father Gogoma with couples association fusing their love and faith when they ably led the second mass.

Both sermons from Father Tauyanago during first mass and Father Gogoma during second mass, centered on overcoming temptations.

During this season of lent, we are reminded of the common fabric from which we were cut, which is dust. This, Fathers Tauyanago and Father Gogoma said should be the reason why we should not waste time hating and looking down upon each other.

Key takeaway points that should guide our conduct especially this lent are.

1. God breathes his spirit into our bodies, this makes our bodies sacred and should be treated as such
2. The world of abundance was placed at our disposal, but we choose to focus on that which was prohibited, just like Adam and Eve. Prohibition was put to remind us that we are not creators but creatures. We thus should not cross the line and take God's place, that of being a creator
3. The devil thrives on seeding doubt in us, and displaying the pleasures of lust of the flesh and the eye. We thus should remain steadfast and resolute to resist the temptations of the pleasures that our eyes and flesh get attracted to
4. We should be content with what we have and be patient with the wealth accumulation process, lest we indulge into evil shortcuts and ungodly ways of amassing earthly wealth

In this season of lent, let our thoughts be provoked and reflect on both our relationship with God and relationship with others.

SUNDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2026
4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME- MISSION SUNDAY
GOING AGAINST THE WAVE OR CURRENT

The month of February is liturgically marked as the missionary month and the St Don Bosco family in Masvingo Diocese set this cause in motion this Sunday by celebrating the mission Sunday with two Eucharistic Celebrations.

The day also saw the attestation of young ones into the missionary childhood guild, the only guild whose origin sterms from a papal establishment and gave birth to the pontifical mission society.

The call for humility was at the confluence of both masses homilies delivered by Father Tauyanago and Father Mangoma respectively.

Father Tauyanago told the faithful that the double obligation they are called to live is that of seeking God and seeking righteousness, with humility intersecting the 2 and acting the catalyst role.

In seeking God, Father Tauyanago said a person should turn to God in totality as a whole composite being including one's energy, heart and mind and shun idolatry.

Modern idolatry is rife and takes different forms and shape including wealth and craving for social attention. Father Tauyanago warned against fractional attention to God, saying corresponding fractional blessings will accrue to us in reciprocity.

On seeking righteousness, Father Tauyanago's message was simple. DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WANT DONE TO YOu. He taught of a new way of securing absolution of sins, otherwise knownas perfect contrition- giving away to the needy that which we love and value most.

As St. Paul writes in the second reading, lines of social categorization must be rubbed, and division along social lines removed across the whole church.

To get to the promised land and be co- heirs in the Kingdom of God, Father Tauyanago encouraged the church to let go of the negatives they are holding on to, so as to free up space to receive the blessings mentioned in the eight beatitudes.

Father Mangoma's homily during second mass reinforced the same theme of forgiveness and letting go, not for the betterment of those we forgive but for our own self betterment.

The Father Mangoma homily also dovetailed with the first mass one by Father Tauyanago on the need to humility, especially in a society awash with pride and composed of a people whose joy and pleasures are rooted in the suffering of others.

Father Mangoma challenged everyone to swim and go against the wave of the current by shunning all social ills that the generality of the citizenry has canonized as normal.

These include corruption at all levels including individual and family social corruption, revenging and possessing clean and pure hearts which can trust others and forgive.

With the young and little ones responding to the call for active participation as witnessed by the growing enrollment of the missionary childhood guild, and the excitement with which they go about the paces of their religious business, an assurance exists that the future and going concern status of the church is guaranteed.

SUNDAY 25 JANUARY 2026
3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD
REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAS DRAWN CLOSE...
ST. DON BOSCO SOCCOM
The parish of St Don Bosco joined the rest of the global catholic community and pilgrims of hope in commemorating the Sunday of the word of God during the third Sunday in ordinary time mass.
At the heart of the day's theme was the clarion call for repentance, a requisite act in the wake of the coming of the kingdom of God which has already drawn closer.
The first mass was celebrated by the Priest in Charge Very Reverend Father Oscar Chagweda, who was later joined by Father Hilario Tauyanago during the second mass as the co-celebrant.
Father Chagweda urged the church to consistently listen the word of God and embrace it because of its healing and hope inducing effect. Additionally, it also has the ability to chase away evil spirits.
The Vicar General also made reference to one of Vatican articles which he said puts parity to the respect assigned to the holy Eucharist to the respect assigned to the word of God.
St Jerome weighs in on respect for the word of God when he postulates that " _Ignorance of scriptures is ignorance of christ_ "
"Let us take the analogy of the digestive system of ruminants in livestock my friends in Christ. Livestock grazes pastures but defers full digestion to a later moment where they chew the cud. So should be the routine of a faithful when it comes to the word of God. We should listen attentively, internalize it and reflect on it and let it guide our steps", said Father Chagweda
In today's gospel, Father Chagweda said Christ makes a passionate call for repentance. An assurance is extended to us that in the end, darkness will not be ultimate. Instead, light will prevail and take dominance over darkness.
Our call, according to Father Chagweda, goes beyond just repenting. The full cycle entails committing to reconcile with the Lord and to listen to his word. Our call is that of both detachment and attachment. To detach from that which we love most and to be attached with Christ, just like Zebediah's sons who left fishing as a source of livelihood and followed Christ.
The call to follow Christ is not a leap service call, but action oriented. It's the action that should show that we are followers of Christ and listeners of the word of God more than just our mouths can speak.
Lastly, Father Chagweda reiterated the power in numbers. The ministry is collaborative, reason why Christ calls and recruits disciples. We too should attract and recruit others to Christ not repel or chase them.

SUNDAY 23 NOVEMBER 2025

CHRIST THE KING

ST. DON BOSCO SOCCOM

St Don Bosco parish in Masvingo Diocese joined the rest of the Catholic community across the world to commemorate a sunday with high liturgical significance, Christ the King.

Proceedings for the day began with a procession from Mamutse grounds in the heart of Mucheke high density suburb where, in a sign of indepth faith, parishioners collectively bereaved the hostile climatic temperatures and walked to the church premises together with Father Hilario Tauyanago and Father Oscar Chagweda.

In his homily, Priest in Charge Very Reverend Father Oscar Chagweda gave a clear account of how Christ's kingdom varies with the earthly chieftainship and kingdoms.

A century has passed since Pope Pius marked the Christ the King day with the quote- Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ. This, Pope Pius said in an endeavor show how supreme and superior Christ's Kingdom is, relative to the ancient draconian ways of ruling that yesteryear kings like Musolin and Starlin ruled.

Father Chagweda challenged the faithful to introspect on who they bow to and deposit their respect and obedience to.

"We should allow Christ, king of the universe to rule in our lives for he is consistent yesterday, now and tomorrow". Explained Father Chagweda

Right from the old testament, Father Chagweda said author after author from the likes of Jeremiah, Isiah, Samuel and Daniel, their scripts intersect on the common point that Christ is a king who rules with love and justice.

In the Bible, the statement of Christ being the king is mentioned 122 times, 90 of which is mentioned by Christ himself.

Father Chagweda challenged everyone to relinquish control and full charge of their lives to Christ, and give him sovereign authority over everything of us.

Christ, being the good shepherd he is and one who rules from the cross even during the moment of his utmost pain and death, Father Chagweda explained how Christ trades his own life for the well being of his flock, unlike earthly kingdoms where in contrast, it is the flock that dies for the king

He shared some nuggets from one Gerald Darring who equated God's kingdom to a space where families live in peace and love, a space where nations care for the poor and vulnerable. Darring said God's Kingdom is that time when we share with the poor and offer shelter to the homeless

Father Chagweda summarized the feast of Christ the King as one where the language is victory and triumph, whose four pillars are Love, Mercy, Peace and Compassion

ADVENT ONGOING FORMATION

Father Hilario Tauyanago gave an informative presentation on the season of advent which comes after the feast of Christ the King.

Father Tauyanago warned the faithful not to misconstrue the season of advent as a count down to Christmas in preparation of the joy and exchange of gifts

Instead, he said the season of advent is one which as faithfuls should adequately prepare for the birth of Christ in our hearts through repentance and going back to basics as far as our relationship with God is concerned.

Father Tauyanago emphasized the the importance of the medicinal sacrament of rependency as an impetus to absolution and new beginning.

Just like in the military doctrine and drills, at programed intervals they are commanded to make about turns, us as Christians we are called to reflect and review our ways of living and embrace righteousness through hope, peace, love and joy.

29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

MISSION SUNDAY

The juvenile evangelizers of the gospel, the missionary childhood members of St Don Bosco parish teamed up to produce a scintillating mass leading delivery on the 29th Sunday in ordinary which was also their day, the mission Sunday.

From orderly gestures, offertory procession with an assortment of goodies beyond their orsinary capabilities to flawless poems to mark their day and extend their welcome and gratitude to the priests and their advisors, the kids gave a bold statement of intent for the curatorship of the future church, a testament that the future of the church is in safe hands.

Father Stephen Gogoma began his sermon by demystifying the the meaning of a widow from a biblical perspective. He further clarified theologically why Christ chose a widow illustration in his parable of the persistent widow. According to Father Gogoma, widows in ancient times were assigned basement social value and were looked down upon. Christ therefore, is calling upon us to be there for the needy, allocating preferential attention and treatment. Father Gogoma said this calls for love, mercy, compassion and empathy without regard of to whom this is extended.

The second nugget from the gospel according is that of persistence. Persistence on things of a righteous nature and social justice, as demonstrated by the persistent widow whose push and determination did not falter till her plea for arbitration of her differences with her enemy got attention.

Father Gogoma encouraged the faithful to at times humbly challenge God to grant their requests. We should offer our petitions to God patiently without being shy to pray and without giving God ultimatum and prescribe time frames by which to grant our requests. We should keep knocking on God's doors till we are answered.

"Bear in mind dear friends in Christ that our God is cut from a different fabric from our human earthly judges who are prone to manipulation and in process compromise the justice delivery system. Lets take time to pray for justice and meritocracy in the determination of cases especially in Masvingo, our own locality", pleaded Father Gogoma.

He took a leaf from Father Samson Mutsvanga's sermon during the installation of the new SJI sisters leadership at Driefontein mission. Father Mutsvanga forewarned the new SJI council members elect to remain resolute and steadfast in the discharge of their duties admist inevitable challenges that await them. Father Gogoma said the same goes for the parish leadership and all other leaders in different spheres of life.

In the first reading, Father Gogoma demonstrated the power of prayer when he traced and chronicled the sequence of events in Moses's battle with the enemy. When Moses prayed, prospects of triumphing increased. But when he was faltering, his enemies reigned supreme. That is why 2 helpers amongst his people chipped in to keep hands lifted in prayer. Therefore, those entrusted with leadership, Father Gogoma reiterated, must root their leadership in prayer and seek God's guidance

Father Gogoma passionately encouraged parishioners to practice mature politics that is guided by God. He reminded everyone that they have an obligation to pray for the prosperity of the country.

He concluded by stating that the essence of gathering in prayer as a church is not in mega numerics but genuine faith, common and pure purpose and practice of good deeds.

"We should also pray for our clergy and the religious. They depend on your prayers for strength. Let's pray for them as they discharge their calling and ministry", concluded Father Gogoma, caping yet another day of unity and gathering in prayer for the St. Don Bosco

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
GIVING GRATITUDE- A PRAYER THAT SUFFICES

St. Don Bosco parish family in Masvingo Diocese collectively gathered in prayer for rain on the 28th Sunday in ordinary time, St Don Bosco Soccom reports.

Proceedings for the day started with the blessing of nearby pastures and fields, followed by a procession to church. St Ignatius of Loyola small christian community led the mass that was celebrated by the Priest in Charge, who is also the Diocesan Vicar General, Very Reverend Father Oscar Chagweda.

In today's dose of the Vicar General's captivating homilies, he began by reminding all that irrespective of social status, there will always be deficiencies physically, materially, intellectually and psychologically. This is especially so in the first reading where Nahaman, despite being a respectable commander of the army and of the command and influence that comes with it, he suffered leprosy. It therefore means no one has it all. There will always be aspects and facets of life that lack.

Turning to the ten l***rs who were healed, Father Chagweda said the ten l***rs collectively prayed for healing. Their collectivism heightened the chances of their prayer being answered. He called for the same collectivism in today's cause, the prayer for rain saying if we unite in our cause and share the same objective and purpose, our request for rain has a high likelihood of being granted.

Father Chagweda said the suffering of the ten l***rs was more defined in the stigma they endured at the hands of society more than the pain of the leprosy. They were detached from society and had an embargo on interacting with rest of society.

"Going by the way l***rs were treated, reflect today my friends in Christ, are there no people whom we have diagnosed with Leprosy today, whom we have resolved never to greet nor converse with?", preached Father Chagweda.

The Diocesan second in charge singled out the healed Samaritan as a beacon of faith and gratitude. Despite being from a rival tribe, he is the only one who came back to offer thanks. This, Father Chagweda said, teaches us that even those whom we view as enemies, have positives they can bring to us and some positives for us to learn.

Father Chagweda further took aim at how Christ responded to the call for healing by the l***rs. Despite the societal stance towards l***rs, that of keeping a distance because of its contagiousity, Christ drew closer to them. Father Chagweda implored the faithful to commit to take the bold step towards drawing closer to those rejected and who yearn more for mercy and share with them their suffering with empathy and compassion.

We sometimes focus on praying for blessings but tend to forget he who extends the blessings to us. Gratitude is often overlooked but is imperative. Father Chagweda shared an english adage which says "Gratitude is a forgotten language of faith".

"Before we delve into many things, the first dimension of gratitude is taking care of our parents. Reflect as you sit there, friend, when last you visited your parents or brought them goodies? Some exempt themselves saying our parents are late. But what have you done to tidy and dignify that place where their remains are interred?", posed Father Chagweda, prompting some self introspection among the audience.

He shared a quote about gratitude from Ekat Miesta who said "If the only prayer that you say for the rest of your life is thank you, it suffices."

Offering gratitude starts with celebration of mass as Eucharist in greek simply means i give thanks.

Father Chagweda concluded by emphasizing the importance of listening and following instructions. Nahaman was instructed to go and shower in river Jordan and the healed l***r was instructed to present self to the high priests for healing certification and they complied.

Their healing was a restoration of their healing, dignity in society and above all, consolidation of their faith
