"Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit do we have if we pray to him?’" (Job 21:15)

Job describes how ungodly people think and how they view God. Ungodly people don't understand who God is. Ungodly people think that God has no place in their success equation. There are people who only need God as their road to success, after which they feel they have achieved, and they no longer need Him. Such attitude turns God into a transactional God who should be worshipped for material benefits. God is worthy to be worshipped, with or without material benefits. God is not defined by what He gives us materially. With or without material prosperity, He remains God. Never be tempted to be self-sufficient. You need God always. Without God, we are nothing.

"Why do the wicked live on, becoming old; yes, becoming mighty in power? Their children are established in their sight, with them, and their offspring before their eyes. Their houses are safe from fear, and the rod of God does not come on them." (Job 21:7-9)

Long life is generally viewed as a sign of divine blessing. Job notes that even the wicked are also given long life. This means long life does not define righteous conduct. God has His own way of conducting the affairs of the world. Job is reversing the general conclusion by his friends that his suffering is a result of wickedness. If God would administer instant justice as the friends think, then it means there could not have been wicked people enjoying long life full of prosperity and stability. Long life for the wicked does not mean divine approval; it simply shows God's patience with the sinner. God opens room for the wicked to repent. "The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent" (2 Pet 3:9).

"...the triumph of the wicked is brief, and the joy of the hypocrite is only for a moment?.... Yet he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who had seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’" (Job 20:5, 7)

Although Zophar's words were directed to the wrong person, they were correct in addressing the final end of evil people. Job was not evil, as Zophar thought him to be. However, it's true that sin seems enjoyable and attractive, but the end of it is disastrous. Sin brings short-term gain, but it is a breeding ground for long-term suffering. Punishment for sin may not come in the lifetime of the sinner. Punishment may be deferred until the final day of judgement when all sinners will be eternally cut off from God. Don't be attracted to those who are successful and powerful by evil means; their judgement is certain. Don't enjoy power and success through ungodly means. Fear God and do the right things.

"For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he will stand at last on the earth. And after this skin of mine has been destroyed, in my flesh I will see God." (Job 19:25-26)

In the midst of his extreme suffering, Job continues to trust God and affirms his confidence in Him. The word "redeemer" in verse 25 was used in ancient Israel, referring to a family protector responsible for restoring justice within the clan. A kinsman-redeemer bought a slave out of bo***ge and protected the property rights of his relatives. A redeemer was a family member who bought back lost property. Job felt that God extremely afflicted him, yet he still had faith in the same God. Job’s affirmation of confidence in God was a revelation of the resurrection of the body. Some people, when they suffer, they battle with the question of whether God still exists or not, but Job clearly declares that his Redeemer is alive. The presence of suffering does not mean the absence of God. The presence of God is not defined by the smooth running of life. God remains God in and out of season. Our Redeemer is alive and is alive forever!! Hallelujah!!

“My relatives stay far away, and my friends have turned against me. My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me." (Job 19:13-14)

Family, relatives, and friends separated themselves from Job because of his situation. Those three groups of people form a social support and security system. Their withdrawal means Job is left vulnerable without social support and security. Job is now treated as a total stranger. Not everyone close to you will support you in your time of need when your situation takes a negative twist. Genuine friends and relatives are those who will provide a shoulder to lean on when you're in distress. Don't trust people; they will sometimes abandon you at the most critical moments. God alone is trustworthy. "A man with many friends can still be ruined, but a true friend sticks closer than a brother" (Prov 18:24). Jesus Christ is a friend who sticks closer than anyone. What a friend we have in Jesus!!

"He has stripped me of my glory, And taken the crown from my head." (Job 19:9)

The once respected, wealthy, and influential man was now left without honour. Glory and crown mentioned in this verse are images of dignity and high status, which Job was stripped of. This was a high level of humiliation. Job was humiliated the same way Jesus was humiliated. Unlike Job, who was humiliated unwillingly, Jesus was humiliated voluntarily for the salvation of humankind. They both suffered innocently and were abandoned by those close to them. They both felt abandoned by God Himself. After their humiliation, they were both exalted. Job was later restored at the end of the book (Job 42), just as Jesus was exalted and is sitted at the right hand of the throne of God. You might be humiliated and in extreme suffering, but God knows His plans for you. Don't despair. Keep trusting God. What you are today does not determine how your life will end.

Then Job answered and said, “How long will you torment my soul and break me in pieces with words?” (Job 19:1-2)

Job feels attacked instead of being comforted. He is emotionally exhausted. He feels broken down into pieces. Never underestimate the power of words. What you say to the other person can either build or destroy. Words can make or break a person. Be careful of what you say to the other person. Words have creative power. What are you creating by the words of your mouth? Some people are what they are because of the positive or negative that was created by other people's words. Create what you want by the words of your mouth. Words can either bless or curse. "Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone" (Col 4:6).

"If I say to corruption, ‘You are my father!’ and to the worm, ‘My mother!’ and ‘My sister!’ Where then would my hope be? Who could see my hope?" (Job 17:14-15)

Job feels abandoned and humiliated. He has lost hope in his future existence on earth; no hope for physical restoration. Death seems to be his nearest companion. Decomposition seems imminent. However, one positive thing about Job is that, even though he feels abandoned by God, he continues to speak to God; he continues to speak about God. Even when we feel abandoned in suffering, our lines of communication with God should never be broken. Don't abandon God even when you feel abandoned. Your feeling of abandonment does not necessarily mean you're abandoned; God is there for you.

Even when we suffer to the point of feeling that death is the only thing left, our hope is in Christ. Death has no final word over the life of a believer. Christ Himself felt abandoned, and He died, but His resurrection challenged death. 1 Corinthians 15:55 says, “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”, and this is the basis of our hope. "Death is swallowed up in victory" (1 Cor 15:54). Let our hope be revived; our victory is certain in Christ.

"But come on, all of you, try again! But I will not find a wise man among you." (Job 17:10)

Job's friends perceived themselves as wise, but Job could not find wisdom in any of them. They had a false view of wisdom. Their assumption was that their success and prosperity were proof that God was pleased with their conduct. Earthly success and prosperity are not proof of faith in God. In the same way, suffering and affliction are not proof of lack of faith. Let's not be quick to judge; otherwise, we end up coming up with wrong and misleading conclusions. Many people have been left without hope because of our wrong judgements of their situations. Let's be sensitive to other people's situations. Jesus warns against hypocritical judgement on other people (Matt 7:1-5). Job's friends saw a sperk in Job's eye and neglected logs in their own eyes. The reason why people don't repent from their sinful ways is that they view themselves as better compared to other people around them. Judge yourself against God's standards, not against other people, and you will see where you fall short.

“My spirit is broken, My days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me." (Job 17:1)

Job was emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausted. He was now in a hopeless state, only waiting for death to take him away. When Job says his days are extinguished, he is admitting that his life is short. In the journey of faith, there are times we feel emotionally drained, and we sometimes despair. Even Christ, in His humanity, felt exhausted and abandoned and cried, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Matt 27:46), but He didn't lose faith in His Father. Job's suffering was a picture of what Christ would go through. At one point, Jesus said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). All this shows our human weakness, which calls for total dependence on God. We feel emotionally drained and exhausted; we feel deep pain and suffering; we feel the nearness of death. God is never exhausted, never in pain, and He is immortal. Let's depend on and trust in God. Surrender your life to the only immortal, inexhaustible, and immovable God. In God's hands, we're safe even when challenges come.
