1 Thes 5:23 says. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole SPIRIT and SOUL and BODY be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Paul brings out 3 distinct things here, which reveal that a person is a tripartite being, SPIRIT, SOUL and BODY. Simple put a person is a Spirit Being, who has a Soul and lives in a Body.
If we fail to distinguish this composition we will not understand certain things contained in the Word of God. I have witnessed people confusing and mixing up these three, referring this one to the Body when it is meant for the Spirit or Soul or either way.
The Spirit man is the real you. When a person is not born again, the spirit is separated from God and is considered dead until such a time a person makes a decision to be born again. Nicodemus got confused how possible it could be for a person of his stature to be born again (John 3:3-4). He was confusing things here, referring things pertaining to the spirit man to the body. What gets regeneration instantly when a person is born again is the spirit. He becomes new. 2 Cor 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become.” Please take note that your body does not change simple because you are born again. It is your spirit man who is instantly born again and seats with Christ in the heavenly places. “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Eph 2:6). This has absolutely nothing to do with the Body or the Soul. It is the Spirit man.
Once the spirit man is born again, then God is able to communicate with the Spirit who now knows the will of the father. The challenge still remains because your Soul has begun a new journey of learning the things of God. In most cases there is contradiction between what the spirit man wants to do with what the Soul is used to do. Things of God remain a foreign language to the Soul. This is why you hear Paul saying in Rom 7:18-19, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” This war within a person is caused by the spirit man who now knows the will of God and wants to do it, but however because the soul is yet to learn the things of God, it becomes a contraction. When a person is born again the kingdom of God is now in him, the spirit man, as we find in Luke 17:21, “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” But the soul still needs to find how this works and hence the soul must now begin to seek and to align to the ethics, principles, ideas, and ways etc. of this kingdom that is within. Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” The soul had his own way of acquiring earthly things and now he has to be educated on the new ways of God concerning earthly things. You can agree with me here that the soul is in trouble, no wonder why from time to time the soul jumps ship and try to do things the other way, ending up doing what the spirit man negates.
When a person is born again, the soul begins a process of regeneration. There is a lot of yielding that is needed to transform the 3 things contained in the soul of person, namely the Mind (thinking patterns), The Emotions (feelings) and the Will (choices and decisions). This takes a lot willingness and yielding to the Holy Spirit to transform these three things till they are able to obey Christ. Paul refers to them as a stronghold in 2Cor 10:3-5, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
It is the soul of a person which needs renewal and transformation from conformity to the standards of the world to the will of God. Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” So the soul must be educated to pray, stay in the Word of God which brings Faith, fellowship with other Christians, listen to Christian music etc. The soul has to endure unto the end; otherwise there is no point where we say the soul is now totally saved like what the spirit man is. “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved (Matt 24:13).
Then the body is one thing that is earthly and does not get born again, neither does it transform like the soul of a person. The inclinations of the body are all earthly and have a zero appreciation of heavenly things. Until at the end when it shall be changed, putting on immortality, the body needs serious check and guard. 1Cor 15:50-54, “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”
I tell you all what the body needs is sacrifice. The body has to be sacrificed in order to do the will of God. Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” And in 2 Cor 9:27 he says, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
Yes brethren when we get saved, our spirit man is saved, but there remain trouble within our soul which would have started a process of regeneration which can only be accomplished when Christ comes back. The body won’t get saved until Christ comes then it will be clothed with immortality!
Stay blessed. Amen!
