ZCMA introduces a platform to address mental health issues
By Florence Zirima
Zimbabwe Christian Ministers Association (ZCMA) has recently introduced a Church Mental Health Zimbabwe program to address mental health challenges.
The program is dedicated to amplifying hope for those battling with brokenness, depression, anxiety, self-harm, addiction and su***de.
In an interview, ZCMA President and CEO Bishop Choto said pastors have great chances to have frequent interactions with people who live with mental illness.
"Statistically, a member of the clergy is the number-one place people go when they seek help for mental illness. You might wonder why people with this sort of problem keep finding their way to us than to all of these places."
"There are a variety of reasons and one of them is that we offer spiritual experiences, promises of peace and love, opportunities for community and for communion with God," he said.
Bishop Choto also added that the program will equip pastors with knowledge on how to deal with people battling with mental health.
"So for mental health problems, church leaders are first responders, consciously or unconsciously yet many pastors feel underequipped to respond.
"This is the reason why as ZCMA through this platform we are equipping and empowering Pastors to help compliment government efforts in this regard.
"All aspects of health which includes physical, mental, and spiritual were of equal concern to Jesus Christ, whose healing touch reached out to mend broken bodies, minds, and spirits with one common purpose: the restoration of well-being and renewed communion with God and neighbor.
"Many interventions are needed to heal the often chronic conditions of the brain and nervous system, known as mental illness," he added.
Bishop Choto also highlighted the need for supporting the families and people battling with mental health illness.
"The body of Christ needs deeper healing in understanding, education, compassion, and adequate ways to support the families and individuals living with mental illness. Those impacted by mental illness also need to be supported in their quest for healing, knowing that most often Jesus heals over time, using a variety of healing modalities," he explained.
There are many reasons that explain why persons with a mental illness diagnosis exhibit difficult or disruptive behaviors.
The reasons include traumatic events like war, abuse or domestic violence, a life of physical or emotional poverty; deprivation of social experiences and limited social skills; and behaviors due to loneliness, being misunderstood, being powerless, or the absence of joy in their lives.
Mental illness is a group of brain disorders that cause disturbances of thinking, feeling and acting.
