Theme: “God Desires Mercy, Not Just Sacrifice”
Main Text: Hosea 6:6
“For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”
Today, God is correcting something very important in our walk with Him. Many people think Christianity is just about what we do for God — attending church, giving offerings, fasting. But God is saying, “I am looking deeper than your actions — I am looking at your heart.”
God Looks for Mercy
God says, “I desire mercy.”
Mercy means:
Compassion
Kindness
Forgiveness
Love towards others
You can pray every day, but if you are:
Holding grudges
Hating others
Refusing to forgive
Then your sacrifice means nothing to God.
You cannot lift your hands in worship but refuse to help someone in need. God is saying: “Show My love through your life.”
God Rejects Empty Religion
“…and not sacrifice…”
In the Old Testament, people gave sacrifices (animals, offerings), but their hearts were far from God.
Today, sacrifice can look like:
Church attendance
Singing in the choir
Preaching
Giving money
But God is saying: “I am not impressed by your activity if your heart is not right.”
God is not after performance — He is after relationship.
God Wants You to Know Him Personally
“…the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”
This is not head knowledge. It is:
Knowing God personally
Walking with Him daily
Hearing His voice
Living in obedience
You can know about God but not know Him.
Knowing God is like a relationship — you talk, you listen, you spend time together.
Mercy Reflects the Character of Christ
When you show mercy, you become like Christ.
Remember:
Jesus forgave sinners
Jesus showed compassion
Jesus loved the rejected
If we claim to follow Him, our lives must reflect Him.
God is calling us today:
Not just to do church
But to be transformed
Ask yourself:
Do I show mercy?
Do I truly know God?
Or am I just doing religious activities?
Let us pray:
Lord, forgive us where we have replaced relationship with religion.
Teach us to love, to show mercy, and to know You deeply.
Change our hearts, not just our actions.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
