Nurture & Retention: The Key to Discipleship
- Nurture & Retention are essential pillars of effective discipleship in the Local Church. The significant membership losses experienced over the years clearly demonstrate that baptism alone does not guarantee a lifelong commitment to Christ & His Church.
- Intentional nurture & retention cultivate meaningful relationships, promote spiritual growth, and transform new believers into faithful, active disciples.
Why Nurture & Retention Matter
*Preventing Membership Loss*:
Historical trends reveal that many baptized members eventually disengage from the Church. This highlights the urgent need for intentional pastoral care, continuous discipleship & meaningful member engagement.
*Building Meaningful Relationships*:
Research indicates that a newly baptized member needs at least six genuine friendships within the congregation to develop a strong sense of belonging and remain actively involved in church life.
*Fostering Genuine Discipleship*:
Nurture goes beyond church attendance. It develops a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ while strengthening spiritual, social, cultural, and doctrinal commitment to the Church.
*Key Strategies for Effective Retention*

Purposefully integrating new believers into Sabbath School classes, small groups, ministry teams, and the wider church family.

Encouraging consistent personal devotion through daily prayer, Bible study, family worship, and active participation in the life and mission of the Church.

Prayerfully reaching out to members who have drifted away, demonstrating Christ’s love through compassion, friendship, visitation, and patient restoration.
