*When the Veil Was Torn Into Two*

Matthew 27:51–53

*"And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."*

Luke 23:44–46

*"And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost."*

When Jesus died on the cross, heaven and earth testified that something extraordinary had happened. Darkness covered the land, the veil of the Temple was torn from the top to the bottom, the earth shook, rocks split, and tombs were opened.

Matthew records another earthquake at the resurrection:

Matthew 28:2

*"And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door..."*

This suggests there were two earthquakes: one at Christ's death and another at His resurrection. Matthew tells us that the tombs were opened when Jesus died, but the saints came out after His resurrection, preserving Christ's place as the firstfruits of those who rise from the dead.

The tearing of the veil was far more than a miraculous sign. It marked the beginning of a new era. The veil had separated sinful humanity from the Most Holy Place, where God's presence was symbolically manifested. By tearing the veil from top to bottom, God Himself declared that the barrier had been removed through the sacrifice of His Son.

The death of Jesus also brought the New Covenant into effect.

Hebrews 9:16–17

*"For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth."*

A testament or will only becomes effective after the death of the one who made it. Jesus is the Testator of the New Covenant. Until His death, the inheritance promised under the New Covenant could not be claimed.

One of the greatest blessings of that inheritance is the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 3:14

*"That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."*

Before Christ's death, the Holy Spirit came upon people for specific purposes and ministries. Under the New Covenant, however, believers receive the Holy Spirit as God's permanent indwelling presence.

Ephesians 1:13–14
*"...ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."*

The word "earnest" means a deposit, guarantee, or down payment. The Holy Spirit is God's guarantee that every promise of our eternal inheritance will be fulfilled.

When the veil was torn, believers were also granted direct access into God's presence.

Hebrews 10:19–22

*"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus... Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith."*

We no longer worship from a distance. We do not stand outside the veil waiting for a human priest to represent us. Through the blood of Jesus Christ, every believer has access to the throne of grace.

We have become God's royal priesthood.

The tearing of the veil announced several glorious realities:

- The barrier between God and humanity was removed.
- The New Covenant came into force through the death of Jesus.
- The promised Holy Spirit became available to all who believe.
- The blessing of Abraham was extended to the Gentiles through faith.
- Believers received bold access into the Holy of Holies.
- We were established as a royal priesthood before God.
- Christ's blood secured our eternal inheritance.

Jesus certainly died for our sins, but His death accomplished even more. By His blood He inaugurated the New Covenant, opened the way into God's presence, gave us the promised Holy Spirit, and secured our eternal inheritance.

When the veil was torn into two, God opened the way. We are no longer separated from His presence—we are welcomed into it through Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest.

The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14–30) reminds us that the master gave talents to each servant *"according to his ability."* No one was left empty-handed. In the same way, God has entrusted every believer with gifts, opportunities, resources, influence, time, and abilities.

The question is not, *"How much have I been given?" but "What am I doing with what I have?"*

In the parable the servants were given *different amounts of money according to their ability*. One servant only received one talent, yet we should see that this was not an insignificant amount. Some received more; but everyone received something and everyone received a large amount. Everyone received something of great value.

“For *the kingdom of heaven* is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. *And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability;* and immediately he went on a journey.”

The master gave 5:2:1 according to each one's ability.

Everyone has been given something by God, though we have not all received the same gifts or abilities. God has blessed each of us differently according to His wisdom and purpose.

When I teach God's Word or write messages like this, I do so because God has given me that ability to serve His church. In the same way, everyone should use whatever gift God has entrusted to them for His glory and for the benefit of others.

Do not become annoyed when I do the work God has called me to do. Do not say, "The apostle teaches too much," or, "He gives too much advice." That is the gift God has given me to serve you. Do not say, "He corrects us too much." Correction, instruction, and encouragement are all part of the calling God has entrusted to me. Just as others serve through singing, giving, hospitality, or evangelism, I serve by teaching, guiding, and equipping the church.
We have all been created differently and gifted differently. God has wired each of us according to His purpose. Instead of comparing or criticizing one another's gifts, let us appreciate them and allow each person to faithfully fulfill the ministry God has given them. When every member uses their gift, the whole body of Christ is strengthened and God is glorified.

If I neglect these responsibilities, I would not be faithful to the calling God has entrusted to me.
Rather than resisting the gifts God has placed in others, let us appreciate them and allow each person to serve faithfully according to the grace they have received.

Some have the ability to sing, others to play musical instruments. Some have the gift of encouraging others with joy and laughter. Some are gifted in helping the needy, teaching, giving wise counsel, praying for the sick, prophesying, ministering deliverance to those who are oppressed, evangelizing, cooking and serving meals, or showing hospitality to strangers. Others have gifts of leadership, generosity, administration, mercy, craftsmanship, or intercession.

The list is endless because God's grace is diverse. Whatever your gift may be, do not bury it. Use it faithfully for the glory of God and the building up of His kingdom. God has given every believer something valuable to contribute.

In this parable, the application could be to see the talents as life resources – such as time, money, abilities, and authority.

Two of the servants understood their responsibility and used their talents wisely and gained more, but one servant buried his talent instead of using it.

The difference between the first two servants and the third servant is that they used what they had and gained more by using, and the third servant did nothing positive.

The reward was the same for both servants, even though one was given five talents, and the other was given two talents. Each performed the same according to the resources they had received.

*Given these three servants are three kinds of people on earth, which one would you be?*

We can say of the work of the third servant:

👉🏿He didn’t think.

👉🏿He didn’t work.

👉🏿He didn’t even try.

👉🏿He made excuses.

👉🏿He was lazy.

👉🏿He didn't think positively about His master.

👉🏿He became unprofitable.

Those who do not serve the Lord, pray, evangelize, give, or use the gifts and talents God has entrusted to them are failing to fulfill their God-given purpose. Like the servant who buried his talent in Matthew 25, they are not being faithful stewards of what God has given them. In that sense, they are not profitable for the advancement of God's kingdom, because they are producing no fruit from what has been entrusted to them (Matthew 25:14–30).

- Ephesians 2:10 — We are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
- James 2:17 — Faith without works is dead.
- John 15:8 — God is glorified when we bear much fruit.
- 1 Peter 4:10 — Each believer should use their gift to serve others as faithful stewards of God's grace.

The key idea is that every believer has something to offer, and God expects us to faithfully use our time, abilities, resources, finances, and opportunities for His glory and the growth of His kingdom.

How to Overcome Doubt, Confusion, Fear, Failure, and a Defeated Life

Many believers desire victory but continue to live in defeat because they neglect the very source of spiritual strength 👉🏿 *God's Word*. Victory does not come by positive thinking alone, nor by emotions, nor by occasional prayer. It comes through knowing, believing, and obeying the Word of God.

When doubt comes, fill your heart with God's promises. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). The more you know God's Word, the stronger your faith becomes.

When confusion comes, seek God's wisdom through the Scriptures. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). God's Word gives direction when the way ahead seems uncertain.

When fear comes, meditate on what God has said instead of what your circumstances are saying. Fear grows when we focus on our problems; faith grows when we focus on God's promises.
When you fail, do not run away from God. Repent, receive His forgiveness, and continue walking in obedience. God restores those who humble themselves before Him.

If you are living a defeated life, examine whether you are consistently feeding on God's Word. A weak Christian is often one who has neglected daily fellowship with God through Scripture and prayer. The battles of life are not won by human strength but by men and women whose minds and hearts are shaped by God's truth.

You will only be successful as a believer to the extent that you obey God's Word. A Christian who neglects the Scriptures should not expect to grow into spiritual maturity. If you do not read your Bible daily and discipline yourself to study it, your spiritual life will become weak. You will struggle to discern God's will, resist temptation, and face life's challenges with wisdom and faith.

When God's Word is neglected, spiritual growth is hindered. Instead of learning to stand firmly on God's promises, many believers become dependent on pastors, men and women of God, or other Christians to solve problems that God intends them to overcome through a personal relationship with Him and obedience to His Word.

If you have neglected daily Bible reading, the answer is not merely to seek more prayer from others, but to repent and return to God's Word. It is a dangerous deception to think that participating in prayer can replace personal Bible study. Prayer and Scripture belong together. God's Word strengthens our faith, shapes our prayers, and teaches us how to pray according to His will. If you are weak in daily Bible study, your prayer life will also become weak because your prayers will lack the strength that comes from knowing and believing God's promises.

Disobedience to God's Word often brings unnecessary suffering into our lives, affecting our relationships, our decisions, our stewardship of finances, and many other areas. While not every trial is the result of personal sin, every believer is called to build their life upon God's truth.

Never neglect the source of power, wisdom, and life itself. A Christian is called not only to profess faith in Christ but also to live in obedience to Him. Let God's Word dwell richly in your heart every day, and allow it to transform your thoughts, your character, your prayers, and your actions. Only then will you grow into the mature believer God has called you to be.

You cannot claim to love God while deliberately living in disobedience to Him. Neither can you claim to be a Christian while living a life of hypocrisy. Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." Genuine love for God is demonstrated by obedience to His Word.

You know your own spiritual condition. You do not need a prophet to tell you whether you have neglected daily Bible reading, prayer, and fellowship with God. Your conscience already knows where you stand before Him.

Many believers struggle because they have neglected the disciplines that nourish spiritual life. If you don't submit to God's word daily, you will have many unasnwered questions and you will end up thinking there is something wrong with the pastor or the church or other church members, whilst something is wrong in your spiritual conduct. A weak relationship with God often leads to weak spiritual lives, poor decisions, strained relationships, unnecessary conflicts, and a lack of wisdom in many areas of life. While not every trial or sickness is the result of personal disobedience, neglecting God's Word leaves us vulnerable to making choices that bring unnecessary hardship.

Do not live an undisciplined and unregulated life. God has called you to walk with Him intentionally, not carelessly or at random. Repent of spiritual complacency and return to the Lord with your whole heart. You can't live a careless and random life and expect great things to happen in your life.

Commit yourself to seeking God daily through His Word and prayer. Let His truth shape your thoughts, your character, your decisions, and your relationships. A faithful Christian is not one who is perfect, but one who continually walks in repentance, obedience, and dependence on God.

Today is the day to return to your first love. Seek the Lord while He may be found, and allow His Word to transform every area of your life.
