Topic: The attitude of a young Christian

As young people we are presented with different opportunities and we adopt different attitudes. The Bible admonishes us to have the mind that was in Christ. Christ was God but he humbled himself, to a mortal servant. Attitude determines one’s altitude. In the secular world, companies hire one’s attitude and train one’s skill. As such, attitude plays a number of roles in life.

Attitude can be positive or negative. Negative attitude regarding spiritual progression is demonic and devilish. It prevents one from being usable in the house of God. In 1 Timothy 4:12-15, Timothy was admonished to have an exemplary attitude. A young lady in the bible whose name was Rebekah, had a good attitude and because of that she was selected to be part of God’s plans. The bible says that she was a virgin and she was beautiful. We thank God for young people who refrain from engaging in premarital s*x. We are still a church that believes in no s*x before marriage. HIV is prevalent in this age but salvation keeps one beyond the preservation that any education may furnish. When Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, his response was, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” The wickedness would have been against God, not against the church ministers or pastors. This is the attitude that is needed when the youths go to universities. Where are today's Josephs, the brothers who will join the "how can I" group? This is a touch me not club. They do not do certain things even if other choir member are doing them or even if some pastors are doing them.

Reading from Daniel 3, we gather that the three Hebrew boys had a serious attitude. The told the king that they would not serve his god. It was not a disrespectful attitude but a God fearing attitude. We are not being admonished to be disrespectful to the elders and the ministers. We are being encouraged to be god-fearing.

Topic: Obedience

The Law of the Lord is perfect regardless of the place and of the situation. God created Adam in his image but Adam failed to obey the one law that God had given him. As a result, mankind was lost and there was need for mankind to be reconciled with God. In his love, God gave Jesus Christ to die for all on the cross so that whosoever believes in him will be granted eternal life. The laws of God are intended to protect the souls of man. Psalms 119:98 reads, “Thou, through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies.” The laws of God give one an upper hand over one’s enemies. Those that desire to lead one astray will not succeed. Many have knowledge of the bible but because they fail to apply it in their lives, their knowledge does not help their souls.

Reading from Genesis 2:15-17 we understand that Adam was given the freedom of choice. God has also granted to all human beings the freedom of choice. He does not force people to live according to his will. He lets them choose their way of life. Saul, the king if Israel, was initially chosen by God to lead his people. With time, he drifted from following God’s instructions and that marked the beginning of his downfall. His continual rebellion to God’s instruction resulted in his seed being cut off from holding the office of King forever. He was not able to appeal against God’s judgement. We too may fall in the same predicament if we continue to rebel against God’s instruction.

Topic: The rock of ages

A rock is a solid, resilient object. It is not easily shaken. It's very different from trees in that if one returns to a place many years later, one will still find a rock in the same spot it was. Our God is our rock. We read of an encounter in the bible when Moses asked to see God. God told him that he could not see His face and remain alive, but God instructed him to stand on the rock so that he would place him in a cliff as he passed. A cliff within a rock is a hiding place when there are raging storms. When one becomes born again, one enters into a battle because the devil will be actively trying to hinder one from entering heaven. However, there is assurance that when the tempests come, God will hide his own in the cliff.

We read, in Exodus 17:3-7, of how the Israelites murmured against Moses because they thirsted for water but there was none to drink. As we go through the different desserts of life, we must not waste efforts crying out to fellow humans. There is one we must cry out to, the Rock, Jesus Christ! In these verses of scripture, the children of Israel wished they were still in the land of Egypt. We were all once in the spiritual Egypt being slaves to sin, but we must never look back. We must look to the rock of ages, Jesus Christ, the solution to all challenges.

In another text of scripture, Moses was instructed to speak to the rock so that the rock would provide water for the people. Instead, Moses smote the rock. In this dispensation, the rock, Jesus Christ was already smitten. The smiting and slaughtering of Jesus was adequate. It is not needful for Christ to be crucified again. All we need to do now is to speak to the rock about all our problems and He, the rock, Jesus Christ will solve all of them!

Topic: Standing in the gap

Ezekiel 22:30 reads, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” At this point in time, the Israelites were facing numerous challenges. No one was available to speak for God and to stand in the gap so that the hedge would not fall. In this day, the Christians are the spiritual Israelites. There is need for today’s youths to stand in the gap. The gospel incorporates both the young and the old generations. The old generation has most of the pastors, overseers etc. they are normally referred to as old-timers. They have stood the test of time amidst many fiery trials. However, there is a natural elimination process. Some of the older generation are being called home and many are becoming incapacitated because of age. Because of this, gaps are created in the duties of the house of God. The gospel doesn't have a succession plan like there is in the secular world. The question is who is willing to fill the gap?

What are some of the qualifications for filling the gap? In Acts 6:3 the qualifying criteria for the men who were to be chosen for God’s work was that the men had to have an honest report and they had to be full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom. This work needs the Holy Spirit because it is a spiritual work. Another qualification is that the young people who must fill in this gap must be principled. We read that Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank. This was an opportunity for Daniel to rise in the political ranks and to live well. But Daniel was principled. Nothing could remove him from what he had been taught by his parents about the worship. Are we able to deny the sinful offers that come our way today, even if the sins come with fame and other earthly gain? God also requires young people with vision. The word says, when there is no vision, the people perish. Do we have a vision of what we want to do in God's kingdom say three years from now or five years from now? God needs youths without blemish. Timothy was exhorted to be an example among the believers. God requires youths that thirst after the deeper experiences of God. Elisha refused to let Elijah go alone because he knew he wanted the double portion of the Spirit of Elijah! The sons of the prophets tried to discourage him but he refused to give in!
